Alila Villas Uluwatu – the perfect luxurious resort in Bali to find peace and tranquillity. At this resort that feels like it’s perched at the edge of the world, set on a plateau atop limestone cliffs in southern Bali, the sense of remote seclusion is a relief. Alila Villas Uluwatu promises travellers a true escape from the daily grind, a property where the sea and sky stretch as far as the eye can see, uninterrupted, undiluted.

Visitors to this Balinese beauty will encounter buildings that cling to the edge of a cliff, clean design that embraces the surroundings, and greenery that, literally, is a breath of fresh air. Yet this 36-acre tropical paradise sits only 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International airport, and once here, away from it all, guests in search of variety will find that there is so much to do onsite, that leaving the property isn’t necessary.

Fall in love with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean from Alila Villas Uluwatu

The panorama of the sky is hypnotic, universally appealing from the resort’s unique vantage, 100 metres above the Indian Ocean. From the villas, the pool, and the restaurants, the views take in heart-stopping golden sunsets and eye-opening, star-studded nights.

Alila Villas Uluwatu's Sunset Cabana

The sky is a constant at Alila Villas Uluwatu, its breadth and scope not blocked by other properties or towering high-rises, clear for all guests to enjoy as nature intended. A memorable evening tradition is to drop by the seductive, clifftop Sunset Cabana Bar, where the open design makes guests almost feel as though they are floating in the air.

When the sun falls into the ocean, casting a brilliant gilt shimmer on the undulating waters, signature artisanal cocktails, silky jazz, and the sound of crashing surf below combine as the sweet ingredients to a joyous toast.

Alila Villas Uluwatu: the perfect place to find culinary inspiration

The restaurants at Alila Villas Uluwatu also offer inspiring vistas of the sky and sea, as well as food guaranteed to enchant the taste buds. At Cire, the menu explores the flavours of the world — everything from Mediterranean with many familiar global favourites — using seasonal and organic products.

For diners that yearn for Indonesian dishes, The Warung (its means “roadside stall” in Bahasa Indonesia) serves items from Bali and other parts of the country, presented to diners seated in the restaurant’s indoor and outdoor spaces. Meals here can be intimate or social, taken on private tables for two dotted around the space, or on large communal tables where guests mingle. This is also the location (along with Sunset Cabana Bar) for indulgent afternoon teas, where hot brews and Indonesian sweet and savoury treats await.

Experience the island’s culture, traditions & wellness at Alila Villas Uluwatu

For visitors who want to learn more about Bali’s culinary artistry, the resort offers a half-day cooking class, beginning with a trip to a fish market before visiting the resort’s organic garden and culminating in preparing a lunch for all to enjoy.

The class is one of the many journeys that Alila Villas Uluwatu offers. Travellers can also visit temples in the island’s south, cycle around the Bukit Peninsula where the resort is located, or take a romantic cruise.

There are also options within the resort. Immersion into the island’s song and dance come with a dance lesson and the chance to play a traditional Balinese bamboo instrument called Rindik. During an aerial yoga class held in the Cliff Edge Cabana, participants can admire nature while suspended from a silk sling, working on poses that improve the spine, alignment, and posture.

The body is also the focus at the incredible Spa Alila, a sanctuary to soothe the senses. Spreading over 720 square metres, it features an open-plan reception, five villas designed for couples (they all have outdoor showers and open-air bathtubs), and a treatment menu of Asian and Western healing disciplines that use natural and active ingredients to regenerate and rejuvenate.

Alila Villas Uluwatu - Cliff Edge Spa Cabana

The highlight is the Cliff Edge Spa Cabana, a spacious room tucked into the side of a cliff that looks out over the Indian Ocean, a vista that amplifies the serenity and ensures guests embark on a truly extraordinary wellness journey.

Other healthy lures await on the resort — yoga held each morning in a pavilion, a fully equipped gym open round the clock, and a 50-metre, clifftop swimming pool that appears to hover above the sea, freed from the shackles of reality.

Alila Villas Uluwatu sustainable design will leave you feeling refreshed

That sense of liberation is also a hallmark of the 65 villas that go up to 2,000 square metres in size and are blissful retreats unto themselves. Each villa was constructed with an environmentally sustainable framework (this is the first resort in Indonesia to receive the highest level of certification from EarthCheck as a Best Practice Building Planning and Design development) but doesn’t skimp on creature comforts, hence the incorporation of a private pool and cabana/pavilion.

Surrounded by bronze and recycled wood jigsaw-like slats, the cosy pavilions are fitted with plush bedding, making them ideal for lounging. Contemporary interiors merge with touches of nature and traditional Balinese accents, seen through the use of water, stone, rattan, and Indonesian wood.

The indoors are connected to the pavilions and pools via bridges and walkways, and an open-plan design with a lava-rock roof and bamboo ceiling enables cooling sea breezes to travel through each villa. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows let the outdoors feel like an extension of the living spaces. Oversized LED televisions and DVD players make the rooms easy places to unwind and catch up on some entertainment, aided by beds that are dressed in linens by Ploh.

Bathrooms also impress, with indoor and outdoor rain and jet showers, yukata robes, locally sourced Alila bathroom amenities for men (lemon grass and black pepper) and women (mandarin, lemon grass, and rose geranium), and a special bathtub box with bubble bath, face masks, and handcrafted beeswax candles. Villas are arranged along the resort’s sloped terrain, giving each a panoramic view of the sea and sky, so it’s little wonder that guests like to hole themselves up there. After all, why leave?

Explore the beauty of Bali at a leisurely, luxurious pace when at Alila Villas Uluwatu

Yet, the choice to venture beyond the room is hard to resist, especially as the resort supplies scores of placid places to quietly reflect, to revere the landscape. Verdant grounds filled with tropical flowers and dense foliage are a joy to wander.

Outside the property, top-tier day trips allow travellers to appreciate more of the area’s natural charm. These include a half-day excursion by helicopter directly from Alila Villas Uluwatu to the island of Nusa Lembongan. Adventurers will see the island’s most picturesque locations, from sandy tropical beaches and clean bays to the distinctive Yellow Bridge that spans crystal-clear waters to neighbouring Nusa Ceningan island.

A similar itinerary is available for Nusa Penida, where visitors will discover natural attractions, unique coastal spots like Broken Beach and Paluang Cliff, and visit the iconic Tree House (yes, it is a house sitting on top of a tree).

For a more leisurely, but equally luxurious, exploit, sail to Nusa Penida aboard a yacht, accompanied by a personal Alila butler. Relax on a secluded beach, dive into a tropical bay, and savour a freshly prepared barbeque lunch. The day ends with the westward sail back to Bali and a panoramic view of the sun setting over the water, before returning to Alila Villas Uluwatu, where everything, and anything, is possible. ◼

At Alila Villas Uluwatu, strong environmental practices drive the resort’s design philosophy. Whether it is on the first, or 500th, glance, the view from Alila Villas Uluwatu is equally breathtaking — it sits on a plateau elevated atop limestone cliffs on Bali’s southern Bukit Peninsula, the vista of the Indian Ocean endless. Situated only 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International airport, and 15 minutes from the iconic, dramatic Uluwatu Temple, the luxe retreat spreads across 36 verdant acres.

Adding to these impressive metrics, this 65-villa, award-winning property, is a model of sustainability, with a minimal environmental footprint, and is the first resort in Indonesia to receive the highest level of certification from EarthCheck as a Best Practice Building Planning and Design development.

When in Bali, immerse yourself in luxury and support the environment through sustainable architecture

Designed by the Singaporean firm WOHA, a trailblazer in environmentally sensitive architectural practices, Alila Villas Uluwatu follows sustainable design principles that accentuate the natural surroundings. The landscaping and overall ambience are informed by the local Balinese savannah-like environment, using rocky terrace fields and lush gulleys as inspiration for the look. Terraced planes are an overarching theme, promoting airflow and protecting cool gardens.

According to WOHA director Richard Hassell, the design of each villa is inspired by traditional Balinese architecture, in the way that the house is a collection of pavilion platforms in a compound. Using the sloped terrain to glorious effect, WOHA designed individually tiered villas, allowing each one to have a panoramic view of the sea and the horizon beyond.

The 65 villas have contemporary interiors with cream and earth tones, enlivened by broad strokes of nature and traditional Balinese accents evident throughout the wood, water, stone and bamboo. The smart design starts at the villa’s exterior, where walkways and bridges connect the relaxation pavilions and pools to the spacious living areas, and the open-plan design allows the gentle sea breeze to circulate throughout all villa spaces.

Locally sourced materials were a key requirement of the building scheme. The resort walls are made from batu palimanan, a stone from Jogjakarta, a city on the neighbouring Indonesian island of Java, and limestones from the resort site were hand cut for the garden walls.

On each villa, the flat roof is covered with volcanic batu chandi lava stone (a type of black basalt) that not only provides insulation but also promotes natural vegetation, and within each accommodation, bamboo ceilings and rattan interiors were locally sourced and crafted in Bali. Other wood materials were repurposed from railway sleepers and telephone poles.

At Alila Villas Uluwatu, experience the best of both worlds: the relaxation of being away from it all, and the luxury of having everything at your fingertips

The rooms, however, do not skimp on luxury — each villa has a private pavilion that overlooks the glittering Indian Ocean and is set within jigsaw slats of bronze and recycled wood, adding visual flair to their supreme comfort. These welcoming refuges are fitted with plush bedding, making them luxurious, easy spots to while away the day.

For WOHA’s Hassel, each villa is not simply a room but a connected series of places to relax, and guests have the power to control the space as they desire. Close a sliding glass door to enjoy air-conditioned interiors, open it to experience the uplifting, restorative properties of the sea breeze.

Alila Villas Uluwatu, a luxury resort that’s home to the responsible traveller

Beyond the rooms, the dedication to environmental stewardship is plain to see. For example, Alila Villas Uluwatu has installed soakaway rainwater tanks and has a recyclable grey water system that directs used water from bathrooms and washing machines through reverse osmosis tanks to be re-used throughout the property’s gardens. On site, the plants mostly used in the landscaping require minimum irrigation, another facet of the property’s careful water conservation plan.

Energy consumption is minimised through a variety of methods. Lava rock roofs, bamboo ceilings and window placement encourage air-flow and reduce the need for lights and air-conditioning. Water throughout the resort is heated by rerouting heat generated by air-conditioning units, another smart redirection of resources to lower energy consumption.

Championing the natural environment takes the shape of raising local plants from the Uluwatu Bali savannah ecosystem at the on-site nursery to encourage local bird and animal life. And that animal life can enjoy minimal pollution and ambient noise thanks to the use of electric-powered buggies around the property.

A vital part of the resort’s sustainability infrastructure is the Sustainability Lab, the thrumming core of the Zero Waste Policy. At this on-site facility, all waste streams are transformed into higher value products and services through a series of simple mechanical and biological engineering systems. From producing its own compost to a glass-recycling programme and organic garden, this site was created to enhance the resort’s efforts to create a better environment for the staff, guests, and wider community.

Under its No Plastics initiative, the resort has eliminated unnecessary plastic packaging and items in all villas and restaurants and, as a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative led by the UN Environment Programme and the World Tourism Association, has targeted to eliminate all single-use plastic by 2025.

The resort is Bali’s pioneer in substituting plastic-based amenities with biodegradable and compostable options, such as bamboo straws and dental kits, small changes that embrace sustainability without compromising luxury or quality. And, in line with the United Nations mandate to support local economic and social progress, more than 40 percent of the staff hired at the property are from the local community.

Alila Villas Uluwatu’s Positive Footprint booking: enjoy a luxurious stay and participate in sustainable & community initiatives

Travellers that want to play an active role in the sustainability effort can upgrade their stay with the resort’s newly launched Positive Footprint booking. Selecting this option will ensure a stay that encompasses the highest levels of sustainability within the guest’s villa, combined with unique opportunities to explore, and even get actively involved in, the resort’s comprehensive environmental and community initiatives.

As an added bonus guests will also receive high quality, durable, stylish sandals made by ethical footwear brand Indosole utilising recycled tyres from the resort’s buggies, a complimentary in-room minibar stocked with all-local products, an environmentally conscious level of butler service with a mindful effort to save energy, water and waste, and a set of drinking glasses made by the Sustainability Lab team from up-cycling glass bottles.

“With our new Positive Footprint booking, we will be able to provide a more personalised experience for those who desire a stay that is as sustainable as possible. It provides the best possible option for our guests, our community and our planet,” explains Hemal Jain, General Manager of Alila Villas Uluwatu.

Guests can also learn more about the property’s sustainability measures first-hand during a Sustainability Journey, where they will take a tour with the resort’s Regenerative Tourism expert to learn about the Sustainability Lab (it was launched in November 2019), as well as its self-sufficiency efforts and integrated design concept that works in harmony with the natural ecosystem. The journey will culminate with a complimentary farm-to-table, sambal-making experience with the chef in the organic garden.

“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do and for us it is the new luxury,” says Jain. “We feel that the modern-day luxury traveller is looking for sustainability in travel and to contribute in some form or the other to the environment and the community.” ◼

The perks of Alila Kothaifaru Maldives

The Alila resort offers easy access to the famous Hanifaru Bay UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, where guests can indulge in guided snorkel amidst the feeding manta rays and whale sharks. Hanifaru Bay is truly a sight to behold. From June to November, the South West monsoon causes a massive build-up of plankton in the bay, drawing hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks.

It is worth noting that diving is not permitted in the bay. The best time to visit is during the day when the sun reflects off the water and illuminates the creatures below. It’s an unforgettable experience to see these magnificent creatures up close and personal.

The island is close to Vaadhoo Island, where guests can witness the spectacular ‘Sea of Stars’ phenomenon. This natural light show is created by bioluminescent plankton and can be seen best from the shores of Vaadhoo Island.

Alila Kids Club is an amazing experience for kids of all ages. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by the friendly staff and whisked away to the play area. There, your children can explore, play and learn in a safe and supervised environment. With plenty of toys and games to choose from, they will never be bored. Best of all, parents can enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation knowing that the children are being well cared for.

The Alila Kothaifaru Maldives Water Sports & Dive Centre has a good range of equipment, including paddleboards, glass-bottom kayaks and windsurf boards and sails. Private lessons and guided tours ensure that even the novice amongst us enjoys themselves when at Alila. In addition, catamarans, speed boats, and even a Dhoni are available to cruise the crystal clear waters of Raa Atoll when heading out to the blue in search of dolphins, manta rays or even turtles.

The Dive Centre at the resort offers a wide range of PADI courses and recommends Labyrinth, Vadhoo Thila, Kottefaru Kuda Thila, Sola Corner and Beriyan Bodu Thila as the top dive sites for certified divers at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives.

Jumeirah Bali is the group’s first resort in Bali, bringing luxury and opulence the brand is known for to the Island of the Gods. The architecture and design of the resort celebrates tropical modernism, a movement styled by Geoffrey Bawa which looks to construct ‘with space’ rather than ‘in space’.

This philosophy can be seen throughout the resort, from the lobby to the spacious, airy villas. The villas are designed to emphasise natural light and ventilation, so you can enjoy the beautiful weather that Bali is known for.

Bali is a renowned tourist destination, famous for its beaches, temples and vibrant culture. The island is also home to a wide range of natural beauty, from its verdant jungle to its terraced rice paddies. Now, travellers can experience this side of Bali at the new Banyan Tree Buahan resort in Ubud, to open in June 2022.

Secluded in northern Ubud, away from the crowded commercial zones, the resort consists of just 16 villas situated along the contours of the topography, sharing space with terraced paddy fields, jungle and river. The villas are designed to blend in with the natural surroundings, fading the lines between a typical ‘resort room’ and nature. With an emphasis on escape and renewal, this new retreat offers a range of activities such as yoga and hiking, local immersive experiences as well as tour programs that showcase the best of Bali’s culture and cuisine. Banyan Tree Buahan can be an ideal place for a luxury escape or a jungle adventure.

What’s unique at Banyan Tree Buahan Bali

Banyan Tree Buahan Bali is designed for the traveller who needs to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. The unique open-air design of the villas means that you can enjoy the sounds, smells and views of the jungle, and the close proximity to nature lets you experience the benefits of forest bathing – a Japanese practice that involves spending time in nature to promote good health. The resort has a ‘no walls, no doors’ concept, so you’ll feel cocooned in nature. The tranquil setting of this jungle retreat will help you slow down and gain a sense of balance.

The 16 villas or ‘Bale’ here range between three views and sizes: Riverside Jungle Pool Bale, Buahan Valley Pool Bale and Rainforest Pool Bale. Each ‘Bale’ comes with a private pool, open deck, pool deck with sunbeds, pool gazebo and a whole lot of forest.

The local immersive experiences at Banyan Tree Buahan range from nature walks and discovering the activities taking place in local villages, to indulging in body wraps, scrubs and massages at the world-famous Banyan Tree Spa. Banyan Tree is also famous for its cuisine, so expect authentic Asian dishes made with the freshest local ingredients.

After a much-anticipated wait, Mandarin Oriental reopens at Lake Como on April 2022. The luxurious hotel is better than ever, with beautiful lake views and stunning surroundings.

Guests can enjoy the best of Italian hospitality and cuisine while relaxing in one of the most gorgeous locations in the world. So whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a place to indulge in some rest and relaxation, Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como is a perfect choice.

Its luxurious accommodations have been beautifully enhanced to provide an unforgettable experience. In addition, the public areas of the hotel also received a facelift with new design features that will make your stay even more comfortable.

With views of the snow-covered Rhaetian Alps, the luxury hotel is perfect for those who want to make the most of Lake Como’s beautiful scenery. One hour by car from Milan or Zurich and you’ll find yourself in Blevio – home to the luxurious Mandarin Oriental, just five minutes by car from the centre of Como town. With its winding streets and picturesque architecture, the village of Blevio has a certain charm that cannot be found anywhere else.

The Mandarin Oriental group took over the 19th Century Villa Roccabruna in 2018 and now features 21 rooms, 52 suites, and two stand-alone private villas immersed into a blooming botanical park. This luxurious hotel is perfect for weddings or events with its lush greenery and beautiful views over Lake Como.

Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como’s Private Villas

Step into a world of luxury at the Villa della Rocca, one of the private villas at Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como. The two-story villa has an incredible charm with its ground floor featuring a service bathroom and kitchen, which leads onto a private terrace overlooking Lake Como. You’ll be delighted by fine features such as an Oak wall from New Zealand or the Fortuny Floor Lamp by Pallucco. This one-bedroom villa is spread across 102 sqm with floor to ceiling windows and a bathtub with views of Lake Como.

Imagine being able to enjoy the scenic views of Italy’s most picturesque lake while lounging in your private whirlpool tub. That is exactly what guests can do at Villa del Lago, the luxury hotel’s 343 sqm elite private villa. The villa was built specifically for those who love spending time outdoors and soaking up some sun by day or sitting down after an evening meal under the stars. The Neo-classical architectural style villa is a stunning four-story residence with three bedrooms, all offering balcony access so you’ll never miss out on the lake views. A private lift, a verdant garden and a private dock on the water’s edge complete the Lake Como experience.

Experiences at Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como

Indulge in a range of treatments from the spa, take a refreshing dip in their Mediterranean bath or lounge by the hotel’s iconic heated pool, which lies on a floating platform on Lake Como.

Chef Massimiliano Blasone, steering the ship at Michelin star L ̃ARIA restaurant, now continues to perfect his craft. He sources fresh ingredients to create a refined cuisine with Japanese touches that impulsively make you want more!

This season he will be overseeing CO.MO Bar & Bistrot menu as well, which features pizzas cooked in front of your eyes with mouth-watering toppings straight off the outdoor ovens.

What better way to experience Lago di Como’s scenic landscapes than by renting the hotel’s iconic 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta for a day? Then, take off on your custom route, following suggested routes that are tailored just right with all of your wishes in mind. A toast la dolce vita!

Another way to explore Lake Como is to indulge in a day trip on a private boat that will give you a chance to marvel at some of the lake’s most scenic locations. You’ll pass by popular destinations like Varenna, Piona and their Abbey as well as the nature reserve near Colico called Spagna Blu that has stunning views of Bellagio—known locally here in Italy simply “la perla del lago” or “the jewel lake.” Have fun taking pictures before getting back onto your boat.

Lake Como & Its Famous Villas

Some of the most famous people in history have either owned or still own a home on Lake Como. George Clooney, Madonna and Donatella Versace are just three that come to mind: owning villas at this picturesque destination to relax away from it all. The villas are often located outside of town and offer stunning views to complement their serene environment, making them perfect spots to get away from it all.

Some of the noteworthy villas on Lake Como include Villa Melzi d’Eril, Villa Balbianello, Villa Monastero, Villa Carlotta, Villa Bernasconi, Villa Olmo, Villa d’Este, Villa Passalacqua, Villa La Gaeta, Villa Marghertia Ricordi, Villa Del Grumello, Villa Maria Taglioni, Villa Serbelloni, Villa Cipressi, Villa Melzi, Villa Pliniana, Villa Oleandra, Villa Fontanelle, Villa Erba and Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable luxury hotel experience, look no further than the reopened Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como. With beautiful views of the lake and stunning surroundings, this is a destination you won’t want to miss. Italian hospitality and cuisine are at their best here, so be sure to indulge while you relax in one of the most gorgeous locations in the world. Villa Roccabruna Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como’s Private Villas offer guests a unique opportunity to enjoy all that the resort has to offer with all the privacy and comfort they could desire. And if that’s not enough, there are plenty of experiences to choose from that will make your stay unforgettable. ◼

Paradise for the Discerning Traveler: Naladhu Private Island

The Naladhu Private Island is located on the eastern face of South Male Atoll, a quick 30 minutes speedboat ride away from Male’s Velana International Airport. With just a handful of villas, the Naladhu resort is all about privacy, exclusive access, and spacious villas with personal attention by butler service on hand when at the Maldives.

‘Naladhu’, meaning ‘beautiful island’ in the Dhivehi language, has been remodelled by Yuji Yamazaki, a New York-based architect, blending the natural and modern aspects of the resort and, in the process, maximising on open space.

Each villa or ‘house’ comes with its own private pool. The houses are named after indigenous Maldivian flowers and plants that grow on the island, with the chosen flora in the house’s garden. All the houses have their own butler, called the ‘Kuwaanu’, the Dhiveli word for ‘storyteller’.

Dining & Private Butlers at Naladhu Private Island

The dining experience at Naladhu’s Living Room is more of an interactive experience between the guests and Chef Philippe Wagenfuhrer. Guests can curate their own daily menu with their preferred location to dine. So sail away on a dhoni to a deserted island with your loved one or enjoy a delicious candlelight dinner inside a beautiful cabana by the sea.

The Kuwaanu plays an instrumental role in ensuring a stress-free vacation when at Naladhu. The dedicated butlers help you build your customised menu based on your tastes and wants, communicating the same to the chef. In addition, the Kuwaanu ensure your favourite wines are stocked in the house bar, your perfect fitting snorkel masks and fins are on stand by and unpack your luggage while you hit ‘discover’ mode on the island’s lagoon.

Not content with just one island, the neighbouring Anantara resorts of Veli and Dhigu within the same atoll – one connected by a wooden bridge and the other via dhoni. The guests get immediate access to six more restaurants, activities and facilities.

I miss not heading to Bali for my long weekend escapes and quick celebrations. For the last 11 years, Bali has been my go-to destination when in need of a short break. I have found myself celebrating family get-togethers and anniversaries in Kuta and Seminyak, winding down to decompress in Nusa Dua, after completing major projects, and when in need of a dose of inspiration – heading to Ubud.

It has only been 18 months since I last visited Bali, but somehow this short passage of time feels like an eternity. In moments of nostalgic daze, I catch myself wondering, as silly as the notion may sound, whether the beautiful sunsets of Bali have dimmed and greyed their pastel display in the absence of tourists or has the steady gush of salty breeze in my Uluwatu cliff villa muted itself down, saving up its freshness for the future. Will Julia Roberts be able to find love again in Ubud in her future travels to Bali? Such thoughts result from a body that is in lockdown and a mind that is yearning to travel.

Bali has its luxurious resorts, sun, sand and the sea, the perfect ambience with the crucial exception of the vital tourist population, a temporary glitch that we hope will soon be fixed as vaccines race forward. I got in touch with some of Bali’s leading hoteliers, and they all reassured me – the sunsets in Bali continue to be just as gorgeous, the weather excellent, and yes – it is still a straightforward affair to fall in love with Ubud.

Space, Sunsets And Sustainability In Uluwatu, Bali

Heading south of Bali to Uluwatu, the land of limestone cliffs, world-renowned surf, and luxurious resorts await my return. Alila Villas Uluwatu’s General Manager Hemal Jain shared his excitement on the island escape and Uluwatu’s success, “Bali has everything for everyone. The island has culture, boutique shopping, pleasing design aesthetics, energy, adventure, and an excellent wellness destination. The universal charm of Uluwatu comes from the way this stretch of Bali’s southern coast is setup – it is all about luxury, space and privacy. I think that’s the reason why people will want to return to Uluwatu.”

Staying At Alila Villas Uluwatu, Bali

The all-villa Alila Villas Uluwatu resort is generously spread out on a hill and along the limestone cliff covering 14.4 hectares with one, two and three-bedroom villas that range from 3,000 sq ft to 32,300 sq ft- guaranteeing space and privacy. This also allows the guest to be confident that they will be well looked after and all the precautions of social distancing taken care of with ease.

Alila Villas Uluwatu

Alila Villas Uluwatu

“The two essential experiences of Uluwatu are the ease of beach hopping from Alila and spectacular sunsets from our cabana”, Hemal explained. The wild surfing beaches etched along dramatic cliffs make for exciting photo feeds and excellent beach-bum days.

Best Beaches Of Uluwatu, Bali

Some of the best beaches in Uluwatu include the Padang Padang Beach known for its rock caves and world-class waves, Suluban Beach with its sandy cave that leads to the Hidden Beach, Thomas Beach with its soft white sand and turquoise waves, the pristine 1.5km Nyang Nyang Beach, the rustic Bingin Beach, the up and coming Pandawa Beach, Balangan Beach that generally makes any photo taken here go viral on Instagram, Tegal Wangi Beach, Green Bowl Beach, Karang Boma Beach and Jaran Cliff Beach.

Best Views Of Uluwatu’s Sunset

Stepping away from the sand and observing the never-ending ocean waves from the cliff tops, I recall spending a good part of one evening at Alila Villas Uluwatu’s iconic sunset cabana, jutting out slightly over the cliff. The Bali evening, cocktail in hand, intoxicated by eagle-eye views, rhythmic sound of crashing waves and refreshing breeze all combined to make the anticipation of the orange-pink sunset bewitching.

It’s these dreamy clifftop views of the Indian Ocean and the glow of the beautiful Uluwatu sunset that makes Alila Villas Uluwatu an elegant wedding destination. The sprawling lawns and the resort’s signature overhanging cliff-edge wedding cabana are beautiful backdrops to plan out romantic ceremonies with group size that can range from an intimate gathering to a gala occasion.

Away from the wonders of Uluwatu and closer to material desires, the one thing that my family and I absolutely love about Alila are their natural face & pillow mists and natural insect repellent sprays, all made with natural ingredients sourced from the local villages.

Sustainability At Alila Uluwatu

In addition to their gift shop and villa amenities, natural and sustainable practices do find home in quite a few of Alila’s operations. Alila’s landscaping team plants lemongrass near the entrances of villas to keep lizards away from villas – simple, natural, organic and effective.

Biodegradable amenities for the villas such as bamboo straws, glass bottles, an on-site water purification system and bottling plant, a Sustainability Lab that converts organic waste into compost used in the organic garden are all small steps with a big impact on environmental sustainability at Alila.

To ensure air-conditioning energy consumption was kept to a minimum, a uniquely Balinese material – black lava rock – was incorporated at the design stage of Alila Villas Uluwatu. The terraced, low pitched roof of the villas was developed using Balinese volcanic pumice rock, a naturally insulating material that can support local ferns & succulents and absorb the heat of the tropical sun, keeping the interior of the villa cool. It is simple and sustainable steps such as the ones adopted by Alila that will ensure that travellers will leave an overall neutral to positive impact on the environment.

Escaping Into The Exotic At Ubud, Bali

Bali’s cultural centre has evolved from a sleepy artisan town with centuries-old connection to herbs, healing, enlightenment, rivers, rainforest, paddy fields and temples to a destination in itself with hotels, spas, organic cafes, yoga studios and a healthy dose of burgers and pizzas. A humourist would observe mainstream Ubud as a place where capitalism and a hippie dream paradise converged and shook hands. What was once an ‘off the beaten path’ is now a top 10 destination globally. Can you still escape into the exotic when at Ubud?

A Stay At Capella Ubud, Bali

I have had Capella Ubud on my Bali bucket list since this unique tented resort opened in July 2018. Had it not been for this pandemic, I would have probably parked myself in one of their Bill Bensley designed exotic, luxurious, stylish tents during one of the long weekends of 2020. Capella Ubud’s appeal is design elegance married with sustainable practices and being true to elevating the charm & magic of Ubud to a new level.

Capella Ubud, an exotic getaway

This unique sanctuary is set within a dramatic landscape in Keliki village, complete with rice paddies and a densely forested valley down to the Wos River. Wait – that’s not all. Step into one of their 23 tents, and you would be transported into an eclectic, maximalism styled fantasy carefully stitched together by Bill Bensley and his team of artisans. Lounging inside the luxury tent, looking out into the depths of greenery, the unique charm and sensibility of Ubud rushes back.

In my conversation with Mark Swinton, General Manager of Capella Ubud, he walked me through this dreamy camp resort getaway. “Stepping into Capella Ubud is like walking into a story and the designer and architect brings his fun and quirkiness and colourfulness to the property. It is a wonderful and different experience from anything else, taking you back in time. When you stay in the camp and hear the rain on the tent, it is soothing. It is meditative. You really feel as if a part of nature is singing to you,” Mark said.

Creativity In Ubud

Beyond the luxurious tented camp resort, the creative heart of Ubud is 20 minutes away and continues to be the epicentre of Bali’s creativity. “The daily rituals continue for the people who live on the island and everyone remains optimistic; the belief and spirituality remains stronger than ever and hopefully, we can welcome international guests back again soon. The Balinese living in this area are highly creative and craftsman in wood & stone carving in addition to excellent jewellery making,” Mark said.

Purification Ceremony In Ubud

One of my travel goals when in Ubud is to recreate that ‘Julia Roberts’ experience and find clarity and peace in a local healing ceremony. It is meditative and inspiring. The challenge lies in getting hold of the real McCoy.

“A lot of effort goes into creating curated experiences with personalized service that one can only do if you stay with us. In Capella Ubud, Bali we have Melukat – a ‘Soul Reborn’ purification ceremony right here in our camp, along the Wos River. Over the last few decades, local villagers have come to The Beji – an ancient spring to collect this holy water to be used for ceremonies in the temple,” Mark explained.

The water purification ceremony cleanses both body and mind, refreshing the spirit and dissolving away any negative influence. The local priest leads the cleansing ceremony with chants and offerings, using the holy water to bless the body and soul. The side effects of this morning ritual include acquiring a fresh perspective, an epiphany or a pleasurable moment of clarity – the motivation to call on Ubud again and again.

Immerse In The Shades Of Green, Black & Blue At Kerambitan, Bali

A family on vacation will generally stay close to the paths of Bali that are well travelled. A traveller attempting to break the tourist barrier will head to Kerambitan.

Rice Fields And Rural Setting Of Kerambitan In Tabanan, Bali

An hour or so north of Seminyak, Kerambitan, in Tabanan regency, is all about absorbing in the great blue sky and green fields of crop. I head to this part of the island when in need of getting in touch with old Bali, embracing seclusion and revelling in the rural, rustic surroundings of a quaint village.

Soori Bali

Soori Bali

The rice paddy fields here exist not for the sake of tourists enjoyment or for the purpose of an Instagram backdrop. The beach in this part of Bali is a bed of black volcanic sand autographed by silver-white waves. When looking inland, Mount Batukaru is a perpetual watermark against a sea of agricultural fields. There are no sarong sellers, no crowds, no traffic, just my million thoughts and a never-ending oasis of serenity.

Staying At Soori Bali

The region’s rural simplicity viewed from the sleek, modern villas of seaside boutique hotel Soori Bali is like being anchored in luxury while the winds, clouds, waves, the Sun and time continue on their journey, bearing witness to my stillness, the surrounding nature undisturbed by my presence.

Greg Hoehn, General Manager of Soori Bali, explains, “Soori Bali is well known for its spacious, private villas, design and architecture.” Soori’s villas range from 1,800 sq. ft to 6,950 sq. ft. all including a private infinity pool, private pavilion and dreamy views of the green fields, blue skies and black sand beach. “The unique volcanic black sand of Kelating Beach spans one side while the other is a sea of rice fields,” Greg added.

Ceremonies & Celebrities In Kerambitan, Bali

“The experiences to be had at Soori Bali focus on the local community, culture and nature. We are very close to the iconic Tanah Lot temple. Ceremonies are being held almost every day and the vision of a temple on top of the water with women adorned in their lace blouse kebaya, batik sarong kamben, and their head-dress udeng, it looks so beautiful, and everyone’s invited,” Greg explained.

One of the royal palaces nearby, Puri Anyar Kerambitan, built in the 1620s by the 12th King of Tabanan, is worth visiting for its architecture and cultural performances. The palace became a social hub in the 60’s and 70’s with royal dinners being held with such a diverse set of guests that included David Bowie, King Hussein of Jordan and Mick Jagger. The celebrity following has not diminished over the years – a certain Kardashian and family vacationed for a few days at Soori Bali, celebrating a birthday in an oasis of privacy.

Surfing, Yoga And Fitness Vibes At Canggu, Bali

You may not be surprised to hear this, but Canggu is the homeland of digital nomads and advocates of avocado smash on toast. Canggu was a former sleepy seaside town with its original surfer dudes that had once called this place a hidden gem and has now been taken over by hipsters on laptops surfing the wild waves of the digital gig economy.

Surf, Beach And Pool Bars In Canggu

Surfers were among the very first Australian and American visitors to Bali in the 70s. This is when the ‘island of the Gods’ started getting known as ‘the island of the surf’. Canggu is home to a tamer version of the famous surf found in Padang Padang and Uluwatu. You can catch some good waves at Oldman’s, Batu Bolong, Berawa or Echo beach – depending on your level of surfing.

For those like me who can’t muster the courage to venture out beyond the sand, chilling by the dark grey to black sand beaches with sights of surfers gliding on waves makes for relaxing days. It is easy to find a pool bar or hipster café here to chill and lounge – with wifi and vibes to match.

If you are one of those rare gems who has been working out during this pandemic for the perfect beach body, heading to Canggu would then naturally be on top of your travel list. Potential remote workers should explore the interesting long term visa options of living and enjoying life in Bali while working digitally, globally. I would not mind attending my next set of board meetings in September from the comfort of a beach cabana in Canggu.

Wellness & Fitness At COMO Uma Canggu, Bali

For the rest of us who have levelled up our waistlines during this one year of stay-home and developed love-hate relationships with our fridge & take-out food delivery apps, will the community at Canggu welcome me with open arms? This region of Bali has an entire industry in the form of yoga studios, gyms, boot camps and wellness academies, all dedicated to making you look and feel good.

The COMO Shambhala Retreat wellness facility inside COMO Uma Canggu, for instance, steps from the Echo Beach, offers an extensive range of detox treatments, massage therapies, fitness centre, and various classes & activities, including yoga and Pilates – an elevated and luxurious experience in Canggu.

Henry Scott, General Manager at COMO Uma Canggu, explained, “People are taking better care of their health and their lifestyle has now transitioned into one that is focused on wellness, fitness and nutrition. They are paying more attention to what they eat and how they work out. This wellness-oriented lifestyle complements the COMO brand.”

Henry continued, “We have a state of the art gym facility that spreads out and allows gym members to exercise and be confident that all current protocols are being observed. At COMO Uma Canggu, we have experts leading Pilates, Yoga and kickboxing classes that can either be done on a one-to-one basis or as a group of family members getting together, building on their wellness goals.”

Learning To Surf In Canggu, Bali

“The outdoor activity that gets Canggu five stars is surfing on the stretch of Echo Beach, home to some of the best surf breaks in the area. When we see the image of the surfers, sitting out there in the water, looking chilled, waiting for that perfect wave with their sun-kissed body and saltwater dripping off their hair – all of that is hard work. All that paddling is cardio, and the balance needed to ride the wave is yoga. Whether it’s a beginner, advanced or a grandfather, when it comes to surfing here, all that matters is your inner child and the accomplishment of riding the wave in Bali,” Henry added.

“At COMO Uma Canggu, we have the prestigious Tropicsurf academy with instructors qualified from technique to first aid certification. These instructors are gentle in the sense that they will not push you over your limits and this is fantastic for families looking to pick up a new hobby. From helping you with the surfboard into our 115 feet lagoon pool or to the beach, from the basics of how to paddle, how & when to stand up, what to do in case the wave hits, accessing your balance and confidence, our professional surf instructors guide you all the way through irrespective of your surf skill level. All you need to have is a positive spirit and an open mind,” Henry explained.

Optimistic on the future of this island getaway, Henry added “When Bali opens up, Canggu is probably going to be the hottest destination in Bali.” ◼
