Norwegian Notes: Of Aurora Nights and Viking Insights. Journeying deep into Nordic wonder, I found myself. Lost in the realms of Norse mythology and studded with icy fjords, endless green forests, and mirrored lakes, the Nordic region unfolds as an inspirational tale of the primal bond between man and nature.

As I disembarked from the plane at Tromsø Airport, Norway greeted me with the ethereal luminescence of an Arctic dawn. The crisp morning air, rich with the scent of pine and the cold sea, was a rejuvenating welcome to this majestic land.

A Voyage into the Heart of Tromsø: The Fjord’s Lullaby and Wildlife’s Serenade

Embarking on a classic mahogany boat, we set sail onto the Arctic Sea, the stunning fjords and straits of Tromsø beckoning us. Each moment was a sensory delight: from the taste of delectable Arctic fish and warming drinks to the myriad of birds we spotted, including sea eagles, guillemots, and eider ducks. The playful antics of puffins, the graceful swim of dolphins, and the distant silhouette of reindeer by the shore made it an unforgettable experience.

Places like Lyngen and Ulls, where the fjords showcased their most dramatic beauty, reflected not just the natural grandeur but also my introspective journey through Norway. Serenity overwhelmed me, making me realize my minuscule existence amidst this vast cosmic tale.

Under the Aurora’s Embrace in Norway: A Husky Night to Remember in Tromsø

In the heart of Tromsø’s wilderness, the husky camp was alight with more than just the campfire’s glow. The sky unfurled a symphony of colours, the Northern Lights dancing above with an elegance I could hardly fathom. Relaxing by the campfire, the toasted marshmallows felt like a sweet complement to the visual feast above. The resident dogs, each vying for attention, added a playful touch to the evening’s magic.

In the warmth of an authentic lavvo (Sami tent), we sipped on steaming drinks, our gazes often drifting upwards, entranced by the Aurora’s ballet. And as if the evening couldn’t get more Norwegian, we were served a hearty dish of bacalao made with tomato and cod, the perfect endnote to a Nordic night out.

But what stole the show, you ask? The Northern Lights? Well, certainly, it’s hard to compete with a celestial light show that could give Vegas a run for its money. Or was it the cruise, with its cast of seals, otters, and a plethora of birdlife, that put any Disney animation to shame?

All of these made my Nordic escapade an unforgettable tour de force. I can’t help but think of this journey as one for the glossy pages and Instagram reels. Concluding this Nordic escapade, I find myself slightly more Viking, a bit more wanderer, and definitely several notches up in my appreciation for a good pair of thermal socks. Safe travels, and may your inner compass always point north! ◼

This tropical sanctuary brews a captivating secret, the crafting of luscious lychee wine. This unexpected delight symbolizes the island’s inherent ingenuity, inspiring us to discover beauty and find luxury in nature’s bounty.

Generations of inhabitants have nurtured the growth of lychees on this sun-kissed island. The fruit, when bathed in sunlight and ripe with maturity, is harvested with a careful touch. This cautious curation sets the stage for the lychee’s transformation from simple fruit to elegant wine, epitomizing the luxurious essence of Mauritius.

The Mauritian lychee wine, with its balanced interplay of sweetness and acidity, paints a gastronomic landscape of the island. Its floral bouquet and unique flavour profile grace the island’s eclectic culinary offerings, harmonizing with the ocean’s freshest catch and soothing the fiery nuances of Asian spices.

This balance is achieved through therapeutic practices that are gentle yet transformative.

These thermal spas, mentioned in the ancient scripts of luminaries like Plutarch, Strabo, and Aristotle, are not merely about warm waters. Each spring boasts a unique mineral composition that caters to varying therapeutic needs. Some, like the Arcadian springs, are ideal for drinking, soothing the stomach with their analgesic properties. Others, such as the springs in Aidipsos, Loutraki, and Eleftheres, provide relief from skin ailments and chronic musculoskeletal diseases. With their excellent amenities, these facilities ensure a healing experience under the careful supervision of well-trained staff.

Experience the Serenity: Wellness in Greece

In Greece, wellness extends beyond the confines of spas. The vast expanse of deep blue sea, the vibrant green landscapes, the melodious birdsong of the Greek mountains – these are the elements that stimulate the senses, invigorating the soul and stirring a sense of calm. In Greece, the colours of nature change with each season, adding a vibrant sensory palette that is a form of therapy.

The Greek coastline offers a unique fusion of sea and spa, where the healing properties of seawater, seaweed, and sea mud mingle with the therapeutic features of spas. These thalassotherapy centres, often a part of luxury hotels, offer an unmatched experience of wellbeing, rejuvenating the mind and invigorating the body.

These springs whisper tales of an era bygone. Tales as old as Pausanias, the legendary Greek voyager, chronicled their birth following a volcanic eruption back in the annals of the third century BC.

Rising from the sea’s cerulean depths, Methana’s landscape is a geologist’s utopia. Resembling a dragon lying in repose, its spine is formed by two rugged volcanic ridges. In 1870, the siren song of wellness echoed across the European continent, drawing a crowd of seniors towards a burgeoning spa complex here. This marked the genesis of Methana’s transformation into a sought-after spa town. As one follows the meandering trails to the fishing hamlet of Agios Georgios, they converge onto the Baths of Pausanias, a famed thermal spring. It’s an odyssey of rejuvenation and discovery that brims with intrigue and charm. Methana, the queen of thermal springs, is enthroned at the base of a volcanic mountain, an appendage of the illustrious Aegean volcanic arc including the regal Milos, Santorini, and Nisyros.

A captivating sense of curiosity stirs within when you ponder upon the abrupt emergence of these thermal springs, as inked by Pausanias. A tale spun during the third century BC, it bolsters the enigmatic appeal of Methana. From being a mere whisper in the wind, the inauguration of the inaugural hydrotherapy centre in 1912 amplified Methana’s voice, amplifying its allure among wellness seekers far and wide.

Accessible via both a serene ferry ride from Piraeus or a scenic drive through Athens and Corinth, Methana reveals itself as a geographical oddity. It clings to the Peloponnese like a pendant, suspended by a thin isthmus. Methana’s topography is pockmarked with a staggering count of thirty volcanic craters, with the most illustrious near Kaimeni Hora, casting an imposing shadow from its 425-meter height.

Meet the owners of number one bar and the winners of The Best Bar in Asia 2020; Jigger & Pony- cofounder power couple Indra Kantono & Guoyi Gan. Singapore, known for its F&B scene is incomplete without the concussions and love for cocktails and what is better than getting a deep insight about Singapore’s food and cocktail appreciation from this fantastic duo. Catch the glimpse as they speak about their favourite things to do and their perspective of Singapore.

(IK) Indra Kantono, co-founder, Jigger & Pony Group
(GY) Guoyi Gan, co-founder, Jigger & Pony Group

Guoyi & Indra - Live Twice

Guoyi & Indra – Live Twice

What are you known for? Tell me about yourself – your hobbies, passion, profession, spare time and how long have you been in Singapore?

Guoyi Gan (GY): I am a Singaporean. Indra, my business partner, and husband, has been in Singapore for 20 years. We are the co-founders of Jigger & Pony Group, born out of our love for hospitality as we enjoy entertaining our friends – whether at home or going out. Our Group’s concepts are classic craft cocktail bar Jigger & Pony, Caffe Fernet, a restaurant-bar, Humpback, a seafood restaurant, and cocktail bars Gibson and Live Twice.

Indra Kantono (IK): I was formerly in finance and Guoyi, my business partner and my wife, worked for Singapore Airlines. We started our first concept, Jigger & Pony, in 2012 at a time when classic craft cocktail bars had yet to be popular the way, they are today. From the very beginning, we wanted to create F&B concepts that embody convivial hospitality – places where people can find comfort, forge friendships and share happiness.

Jigger & Pony - Interiors

What according to you is Singapore famous for? One place you like to visit in Singapore and would love to go back?

IK: Singapore’s cocktail bar scene has really taken off in recent years, and some of our cocktail bars have been acknowledged as among the best bars in not just Asia, but the world – bars like Manhattan, Atlas and Gibson, one of our other concepts. In May this year, Jigger & Pony was named the top bar in the annual Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2020 – right in the middle of Singapore’s Community Circuit Breaker lockdown period. We pivoted to deliveries of our Group’s signature cocktails such as Jigger & Pony’s Old Fashioned in pouches and food items such as Live Twice’s sandos. We continue to do so today even as Singapore started to reopen in stages from 2 June. We were relieved and thrilled when Jigger & Pony reopened on 9 September, 2020. It’s located in the Chinatown area, the unofficial home of Singapore’s cocktail scene; my friends and I enjoy bar-hopping in this neighbourhood.

GY: Jigger & Pony is not only our first “baby”, but also our flagship. I split my time among all our brands but spend a lot of my time there during the week. It’s often where Indra and I end our “work day” as well.

Caffe Fernet - Interiors

Caffe Fernet – Interiors

Recommendation on your most tapped tourist spot in Singapore?

GY: I love the Singapore Zoo. It’s renowned for its open concept. Animals here live in spacious and landscaped environments, simulating that of their natural habitats.
IK: I like to take visitors to the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Spanning 82 hectares just five minutes away from Orchard Road, it has been at the same location since 1859. It is also Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and houses thousands of plant varieties, including rare orchids and ancient trees. It’s a great place for picnics or just to walk around.

One activity you love doing in Singapore?

GY: Going to the Tiong Bahru market on the weekends to shop for produce to cook with. The wet market is considered one of the best in Singapore and people from all over the island come here for their grocery shopping. After I’m done with my groceries, I’ll have breakfast with Indra at Tiong Bahru Market’s hawker centre. My favourite breakfast here is pork porridge with freshly fried youtiao (Chinese crullers). We will also share some chwee kueh (steamed rice cakes served with salty-sweet chye poh or preserved radish). We always ask for extra chye poh.
IK: I enjoy my evening jogs along the Singapore River and around the Marina Bay area. The landscape never fails to inspire me.

Are you adventurous? Tell us the most adventurous thing you have done in Singapore?

GY: Going offshore fishing on a boat around the Southern Islands.
IK: Adrenaline is not for me. But I do join Guoyi after her fishing trip for a hotpot dinner.

Your favourite hotel in Singapore?

GY: The St Regis. It’s where we got married!
IK: I also love the Fullerton Hotel. I do a few of my meetings in the sun-drenched lobby courtyard. It’s also quite near Caffe Fernet, one of our concepts at Customs House across the road.

Do you have any favourite restaurants and bar here in Singapore? Your most loved cuisine? Your favourite drink?

IK: Wine RVLT is our favourite bar currently. Its wine list focuses on natural wines. For date night, our go-to is Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chophouse. The food is well-executed, service is on point and we both love the relaxed, buzzy ambience.
GY: My favourite drink is a martini while Indra’s is a Mizuwari, a classic whisky and water cocktail; the word means “water” and “divide” in Japanese. And we both love to drink these cocktails at our bar, Live Twice.

Five things you can’t live without? Your most treasured piece in your home?

GY: Spin class, which I now do at the balcony of our apartment. A big-screen TV. Artisanal cheeses from The Cheese Shop at Joo Chiat. Sardines in extra virgin olive oil. My most treasured piece in our home is our custom dining table by Gabriel Tan Studio. It’s where I work in the day, and where I entertain friends at night.
IK: My iPad to stream AS ROMA football matches. Common Project sneakers. My Loopwheeler cardigan. My most treasured piece at home is the Eames Lounge Chair, a gift from Guoyi.

Must go places or shops for all your lifestyle & fashion needs?

GY: I love In Good Company, by Singapore designer Sven Tan, which offers timeless wardrobe essentials and classic silhouettes with a twist that are versatile and easy to wear.

What or Who inspires you in Singapore? What is the most memorable and exciting thing you have ever seen in your field/industry?

GY: The bar community inspires me. There is a lot of camaraderie and mutual support amidst healthy competition. We’re a close-knit community, and seeing how we have been impacted by COVID-19 drove me to establish the Singapore Cocktail Bar Association (SCBA) in June with fellow bar industry leaders. The bar industry worldwide is hurting and Singapore is no different – we need to come together to work towards a recovery. We have surpassed our immediate target of $150,000 in funds from corporate donations. These funds will be channelled into three relief funds to support individuals who are affected by pay cuts or have lost their jobs, give newer bars a fighting chance at survival and help the industry recover.
IK: I often go to bars solo, sit at the bar counter and observe the interaction between bartenders and guests. These scenes always inspire me. It is hugely rewarding to see bartenders showcasing their passion and craft, and for guests to be engaged to convivial
laughter. ◼

What comes to my mind when I say Majulah Singapura? Diversity, Powerful & Thriving. While Singapore is one of the nations that top the list of world’s most expensive places to live, it has its own cosmopolitan charm and is known for its futuristic picture-perfect skylines, bustling city centre, cleanliness and greenery.

In this small but densely packed multicultural country there is an abundance of buzzing nightlife spots, shopping destinations to multicuisine food joints. I had an amazing opportunity to interview some very talented personalities from various trendsetting lifestyles, who shared insights about their perspective of Singapore – it is yummy, offbeat, thrilling and colourful.

Lisa Von Tang, Fashion Designer

I’ve lived mostly in Singapore for the last twelve years and fell in love with this place as a young girl. The Chinese side of my family has deep roots here, and I am inspired by Asian cultural fusion – which Singapore certainly represents. I like to think of Singapore as the most culturally integrated place in Asia, with a lightspeed development story, where any colour of Asian can feel at home.

Lisa Von Tang

I love immersing myself in the nature reserve at MacRitchie Reservoir. You’ll most certainly bump into a family or two of monkeys, and it’s a place that you can really get a feel for the tropical nature here. For lunch, my go-to place is Clan Café at private member’s club Straits Clan. They have local food which is elevated into unique, delicious fusions, and the staff are friendly and wonderful.

For happy hour, I go to Smoke and Mirrors at the National Gallery. CURE, Nouri, or Dempsey Cookhouse and Bar are some of my favourites for dinner. I’m inspired by people who live outside conventional expectations here in Singapore.

Olga Iserlis, Luxury Events Creator

Having lived in Singapore for over 30 years, I am proud to call this amazing place my home. Being an events creator, I am known as a Creator of Experiences and turning them into special memories. Given how accessible Singapore is, I find that it’s the perfect spot for conceptualizing and staging events with experiential and activity-based elements. It’s really a hard place to beat! Singapore is full of unique and unforgettable experiences, and, of course, food is one of the main attractions. Not to be missed are local eateries and Hawker Centres that offer a feast of local cuisine. Historical and charming parts of Singapore, for example, Haw Par Villa, colourful Tanjong Pagar area; Marina Bay Sands; and just simple stroll along picturesque streets of the city is a delight.

Olga Iserlis

Olga Iserlis

I love Japanese food and my favourite Japanese restaurant is HIRYO. There are many bars in Singapore, and the choice is immense. I enjoy going to Manhattan Bar, as well as Writers Bar in Raffles Hotel. My go-to drink is a classic Vodka Martini with extra olives! I like speciality shops, and here are some of my favourites: Candles and home gifts from ‘Officina Profumo – Farmaceutica Di Santa Maria Novella’ and BYND Artisan for my stationery and personalized gifts.

Being a classic dresser, some of my favourite pieces I have been collecting come from brands like Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Dries van Noten, Aquazzura, Gianvito Rossi, Christian Louboutin for shoes, and Vince for casual, comfortable leisurewear. For speciality food items I go to Culina and Little Farms, and for seasonal and local vegetables I enjoy shopping at local markets. My all-time favourite weekend indulgence is to get fresh flowers from local wholesalers around the Upper Thompson Road.

Sabrina Sikora, Model, Photographer & Fashion Stylist

Originally from Georgia, USA, I moved to Singapore in 2016 after spending nearly a decade in Hong Kong. Two things I love about Singapore are its food culture and fashion scene. Since moving here, I have enjoyed all the new culinary experiences. The Writers Bar is a fave spot and I love the way they have done their menus as journals. Such a great way to share a bit of history with tourists in a clever way.

Sabrina Sikora

Sabrina Sikora

My most favourite activity in Singapore is to explore the Boutiques Fair in March and November. It brings together over 300 local brands and encourages sustainability and giving back through the brands’ efforts. I always find the most amazing treasures, many created and made right in the Red Dot! There is so much talent right here I rarely feel the need to shop beyond the region. Also, the local design scene is very inspiring to me here. I love that so many businesses are built ‘by women for women’ and are also busy giving back and doing good in the community.

Nida Shay, Fashion Designer

I was born and raised in Abu Dhabi, and I have lived in the United Kingdom as well as Paris for my university degrees. My husband and I relocated from Dubai to Singapore towards the end of 2009 and both our sons were born here. Having lived in different parts of the world, I strongly feel Singapore has a lot to offer. I love the efficiency with which every single department works and no other place compares to the system they have in place here. From law and order, varieties of good quality food, to its amazing tourist attractions which put it on the top of the map.

Nida Shay

Nida Shay

I love The St. Regis Hotel, because of so many memories attached to my time there. My favourite spot to visit is Sentosa. I love nipping off to staycations there, it instantly recharges you and makes you feel like you’ve been on a mini-break. I also love the variety of shopping experiences that Singapore offers; however, Paragon and Marina Bay Sands happen to be my favourite shopping destinations.

In recent times my favourite restaurant here has been Koma and Tatsuya for Japanese; I also love CUT, my favourite mocktail is Double Happiness. Spago is my favourite rooftop scenic restaurant for Italian cuisine.

Sharon Wong, CEO, Motherswork

Known as Mama Sharon and self-taught baker, my family has been living in and out of Singapore; however, this time it has been ten years. I love the alfresco bars, greenery, and the hawker food in Singapore. Clifford Pier overlooking Marina Bay Sands is my most favourite spot. I love taking pictures with the Merlion and Marina Bay Sands in the background and having a drink at the many alfresco bars along Marina Promenade.

Sharon Wong

Sharon Wong

As a family, we love to eat, and each year, we try to visit 50 food and beverage places we haven’t been before and rate them. And in Singapore, there are always new places to explore. The Capella in Sentosa is my favourite hotel, and Fatcow my favourite restaurant. I enjoy anything in gin and favourite bar is Tess bar. I love shopping at Ion Orchard and Takashimaya.

One aspect of Singapore that I like is the presence of several women entrepreneurs, some half my age. Their energy and tenacity to continuously reach for greater heights inspire me and motivate me to keep going and continue to support and empower other women.

Valley Arora, CEO, Photophactory

Photography has always been my passion; I am a self-learned photographer. We moved to Singapore in 2008 and since I arrived here, I was always curious about Peranakan culture and its history. I decided to explore more of Singapore on foot and click pictures along the way.

Valley Arora Photophactory

Valley Arora Photophactory

With the Peranakan culture slightly fading in Singapore today, I thought it was more important than ever to preserve it. I decided to re-endorse this culture with my lifestyle products and merchandise imprinted with these photographs.

I love to discover Peranakan culture in the Joo Chiat area in Singapore as I stroll past heritage shophouses, quaint stores, and eateries in the charming corner of eastern Singapore. I also love visiting Kampong Glam area, also known as Arab Street.

My favourite aspect of Singapore is its cleanliness. The mural art on every other street, a strong sense of community, confidence to embrace their culture, and how people are fashion-forward, ambitious and driven are different facets of Singapore I am in love with. My two favourite bars are Atlas, a Great Gatsby inspired bar and Long Bar at Raffles Hotel. I love the food at Koma and Bakalaki Greek Taverna.

Dr Jade Kua, Paediatric Emergency Specialist and Life Coach

I consider myself lucky growing up in Singapore as I love food. Singapore is particularly famous for her diverse food scene. Since we live in a multi-racial, multicultural city, it is quite natural to have various types of cuisines, something that Singapore takes pride in as there are no natural resources here other than our people. It is also not just about high-end restaurant scenes; we have many Michelin star restaurants and an abundance of local street food available at hawker centres. Many of us love hawker fare for the sense of nostalgia attached to these dishes.

Dr Jade Kua with Tjin Lee

Dr Jade Kua with Tjin Lee

My favourite restaurants are National Kitchen by Violet Oon, as I relish Peranakan food. Dishes at Violet Oon represent Singapore’s rich history at the crossroads of the world.

When it comes to tourist attractions, I love bringing my kids to the Zoo which is almost like a Safari because of the smart way the animals’ habitats are built. It is a good way to show the kids about the rest of the world through their animals.

As for shopping, I like FUNAN Digital Mall for the cool shops within, such as Carrie K for cool jewellery, and Minor Miracles for uniquely printed clothes. ◼

Yvonne Reichmuth On Inspiration & Timeless Beauty https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/yvonne-reichmuth-on-inspiration-timeless-beauty/ Thu, 03 Oct 2019 23:02:00 +0000 https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/?p=18170

Sure, Yvonne Reichmuth’s incredibly cutting-edge, world-class structural fashion stuns, but did you know her indulgent, sophisticated design is just the tip of the iceberg that is her luxurious sensibility? We go deeper with YVY to see what drives this iconic designer and learn about her tips for touring the hidden gems of Zurich.

With theatrical styles that shine the spotlight on the female form, she’s been a favourite of the world’s top celebrities like Kristen Stewart, Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner, Eva Longoria, Shakira, Janelle Monae, Ciara, and actress Lydia Hearst. They’ve worn everything from hats and belts, to snake corsages and skirts hand-crafted out of luscious materials including the finest Italian suedes, using eco-friendly vegetable dyes.

Far from fast fashion and light-years away from mass-production, YVY specialises in heirloom pieces that evoke the romantic and historical, reflected in the architecture that inspired them. So which Swiss architects might serve as an inspiration for her today?

“Peter Zumthor’s work is beautiful, clean and elegant. The thermal baths in Vals is definitely worth a visit,” she said. Indeed. Voted the best Alpine spa in the world, you will definitely want to put Vals on that bucket list of yours. We always look forward to lavishing some much-needed me-time while escaping from our hectic lives, never too busy to indulge at fairy-tale destinations.

“Leather has this magical attraction -its skin is sensual and sensitive; real, and honest, becoming more and more beautiful over time.” – YVY

Her tagline is Swiss Leather Luxury, but Swiss precision might be more accurate and this explains a lot about why she doesn’t feel the need to relocate somewhere iconic like Paris or Manhattan, preferring to stay close to her roots and her inspirations.

The Suit Coat, worn as a dress, with the Brick Corsage in shiny leather (has been worn by Katy Perry)

But, why leather? Her answer revealed a love affair with the material. “Leather has this magical attraction––its skin is sensual and sensitive; real, and honest, becoming more and more beautiful over time.”

Speaking of time, we asked Yvonne about her earliest inspiration creating fashion during her childhood. She shared a little story about longing. “When I was a child, I remember desperately wanting a long leopard coat. I convinced my mum to buy me some fake fur and I hand-stitched some panels and tubes together. It’s funny to think about that now. Over twenty years later, I still love to wear a leopard coat.”

From piecing together leopard coats in childhood to her latest collection called BRUT, we wanted to know what mantra she might use to describe the heart and soul of the garments––“BRUT proves that raw can be beautiful, androgynous can be sensual, and minimalistic can be spectacular.”

The Crystal Cape, the key piece of the collection, made out of Italian vegetable tanned leather and 11 meter of handsewn Swarovski crystals

Interested in where we might drink some Brut while wearing it too––we’d been on the edge of our seats waiting to ask her about some of Zurich’s spectacular hidden gems, off-the-beaten back excursions and pick for best restaurant.

“I often take visiting friends to dinner at the restaurant Schönau, close to the simple-chic Greulich hotel. For a day in the city, you can find one-of-a-kind designer pieces at the Boutique Tasoni and enjoy a stroll along the river and in the old town of Niederdorf.” Otherwise known as Zurich’s Old Town, enchanting Niederdorf will find you shopping by day and enjoying world-class nightlife until dawn.

After asking about Yvonne’s latest guilty pleasure, she offered something simple and seductive, “A Bloody Mary at the iconic Kronenhallebar.” Sipping our favourite cocktail at one of the most legendary bars in the world where artists, designers, and literati have rendezvoused since the 1920s?
