New Luxury Hotel on Remote Island Getaway to the Heart of Maldives. Raa Atoll is one of many gorgeous atolls that make up the Maldives and is a perfect destination to spend your vacation time. The Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, a new luxury resort recently opened in the stunning Raa Atoll, offers an unparalleled opportunity to get close to the heart of Maldives and explore all that the islands have to offer.

Raa Atoll, 45 minutes by seaplane from Male, is known for its beautiful coral reefs, clear blue waters, and abundant marine life, including manta rays and whale sharks. It is thus an excellent place for snorkelling and diving. With its luxurious accommodations and amenities, Alila Kothaifaru is sure to provide the perfect place to relax and unwind as you take in the unforgettable sights and sounds of the Maldives.

Nestled in the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean, Alila Kothaifaru is home to 80 luxurious villas, each designed to offer unmatched privacy and comfort. The perks of Alila Kothaifaru Maldives

The Alila resort offers easy access to the famous Hanifaru Bay UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, where guests can indulge in guided snorkel amidst the feeding manta rays and whale sharks. Hanifaru Bay is truly a sight to behold. From June to November, the South West monsoon causes a massive build-up of plankton in the bay, drawing hundreds of manta rays and whale sharks.

It is worth noting that diving is not permitted in the bay. The best time to visit is during the day when the sun reflects off the water and illuminates the creatures below. It’s an unforgettable experience to see these magnificent creatures up close and personal.

The island is close to Vaadhoo Island, where guests can witness the spectacular ‘Sea of Stars’ phenomenon. This natural light show is created by bioluminescent plankton and can be seen best from the shores of Vaadhoo Island.

Alila Kids Club is an amazing experience for kids of all ages. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by the friendly staff and whisked away to the play area. There, your children can explore, play and learn in a safe and supervised environment. With plenty of toys and games to choose from, they will never be bored. Best of all, parents can enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation knowing that the children are being well cared for.

The Alila Kothaifaru Maldives Water Sports & Dive Centre has a good range of equipment, including paddleboards, glass-bottom kayaks and windsurf boards and sails. Private lessons and guided tours ensure that even the novice amongst us enjoys themselves when at Alila. In addition, catamarans, speed boats, and even a Dhoni are available to cruise the crystal clear waters of Raa Atoll when heading out to the blue in search of dolphins, manta rays or even turtles.

The Dive Centre at the resort offers a wide range of PADI courses and recommends Labyrinth, Vadhoo Thila, Kottefaru Kuda Thila, Sola Corner and Beriyan Bodu Thila as the top dive sites for certified divers at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives.

What could be a better way to make the best out of the winter season than by visiting places that are big on winter sports? Here are a few places for adventure-loving souls to add to their holiday season travel list..

5. Asahidake Ski Resort in Hokkaido

As a popular skiing and hiking destination, Mt. Asahi Dake, near the town of Higashi Kawa in Hokkaido, lives up to the expectations of a perfect spot for winter sports and is one of the best places to visit in Japan during January. 6. Northern Lights in Finnmark, Norway

Despite being one of the most remote locations in Europe, Finnmark manages to impress travel enthusiasts worldwide. Being within the Arctic Circle during winter promises to be an epic adventure and a place that’s on almost everyone’s must-visit list during winter. This entire section of Northern Norway is fjord country, with a coastline that is a rugged and a haven for trekking enthusiasts.

The night sky here lights up with the brilliant display of aurora borealis, making the whole experience magical and out of this world. Outdoor activities at night such as dog sledging and snowshoeing ensure your nights are just as exciting as your day.

This northern destination, away from most human settlements, offers an easy escapade into the wilderness. Watch reindeers from a distance as you cross-country ski with your local guide. With frozen fjords and lakes on hand, do give ice fishing, or better yet, ice bathing a go.

7. Mountains of Bregenzerwald in Vorarlberg, Austria

The valleys and peaks of the mountainous Bregenzerwald are an abode of winter and snow activities and are a must-visit during January. The region offers different skiing facilities that you can enjoy with your family. All you need to do this January is to get a 3Valley ski pass for the area, and that’s about it. You will be able to access all the different ski areas daily for the duration of your trip.

In case you are not in the mood to ski, do try out other winter activities, such as lounging by the snow with a hot cup of cocoa or visiting a husky ranch. On the other hand, suppose you aspire to be a little more active, hike and explore the charming town centre. Try out the horse carriage ride in Sankt Johann, or get on a toboggan run down the many slopes around the valley.

Where to Stay at Bregenzerwald: Hotel Arlberg Lech; Hotel Zurserhof

8. Skiing in Turkey’s Ulu Dag, the mountain of the Gods

If you’re looking for paradise on earth, then take time out to visit Ulu Dağ in Bursa this January. This high mountain in north-western Anatolia is covered entirely by snow. The local ski resort 30 minutes away from town offers comfortable, overnight stays. This also happens to be Turkey’s most popular winter sports centre.

Ulu Dağ is also known as ‘The Mountain of Gods’, a once sacred site. It’s said that Zeus lived here with all his fellow gods, and hence this place has been known as ‘the mountain where they live’ or ‘heavenly home’.

You’ll find five different forest species here, perfect for forestbathing while enjoying nature at its finest. And if not enough time or energy remains after all these activities, then take in this beautiful mountainside via a cable car ride with 360-degree views of this Turkish resort.

As you drive towards Mount Oldag, the scenery becomes more and more magnificent. You can take a break and have a hot meal at one of the cafes on your way up. There are many lounges, restaurants and tea houses throughout this region where travellers rest before reaching the top. These breaks allow for some peace before beginning another adventure – hiking through the rugged forestry trails.

9. Sermilik Fjord in Greenland

Sermilik Fjord is one of the best places to visit in January. No matter what winter activity you are interested in, Sermilik Fjord offers it all. Sermilik Fjord is located on the eastern coast of Greenland and has a spectacular coastline with majestic mountains that rise straight up from the seawater, forming part of a greater fjord system.

Getting to Sermilik fjord is an adventure in itself. You need to first travel from Kangerlussuaq to Nuuk and on to Kulusuk. From here, it’s a simple matter of taking a helicopter that flies the route twice a week. Dogsleds or fishing boats are also common transport options here!

If you like winter sports, Sermilik Fjord is the place to be. If you want more winter sports than just skiing, Sermilik Fjord has that as well. The region’s wilderness and sheets of snow offer winter activities to suit every taste. Sermilik Fjord is a good place for winter camping. The wildlife of Sermilik Fjord offers an excellent opportunity for photographing animals in their natural environment.

Even though dog sledging is accessible in other parts of the world, the ‘sledge dogs’ in Greenland come from the original Greenlandic pedigree, making the experience unique. You can even spend your time hiking, kayaking among the icebergs whilst exploring the coastline.

The concept of ice diving under a Glacier gets real here, and divers can go underwater and swim next to, or under, slabs of ice and glaciers. In addition, divers can encounter minke whales, narwhals and other marine creatures unique to the arctic.

Spirituality and Wellness in January 2022

If you wish to take a break from the monotonous routine of the last two years and look forward to rejuvenating yourselves, here are the best places to visit for a wellness retreat this January.

10. Wellness break in Sri Lanka

In January, plenty of sunshine right at the beginning of the monsoon season makes Sri Lanka an ideal place to visit during January. As a land soaked in cultural practices, head to any part of the island and witness the Thai Pongal celebrations with much grandeur.

Sri Lanka has many meditation centres outside Colombo, making it an ideal country for spiritual & wellness tourism. The objective of a wellness escape is to nourish a positive outlook in oneself, enhance mental wellbeing and rejuvenate. The Buddhist meditation activities here mainly deal with right mindfulness, right concentration and right view, three of the Noble eightfold path.

Some of the popular meditation centres in Sri Lanka include Ridee Vihara, Rockhill Hermitage, Kanduboda Meditation Center, Nilambe Buddhist Meditation Centre, Paramita International Meditation Center, Sri Subodharama international Meditation Center, Dhamma Kuta and Amawathura Meditation Center.

The search for wellness does not end with meditation and mental wellbeing. There is an entire segment of cuisine under the umbrella of Ayurveda that focuses on balance in the body through food. Almost all good wellness centres in Sri Lanka incorporate Ayurveda inspired food in their menu.

In between the wellness journey, take time to visit the well-preserved ruins near Anuradhapura, a magnificent city established around Buddha’s Fig Tree. Also, visit the country’s tea production capital Nuwara Eliya, also known as ‘Little England’ within the central highlands.

Bali is an epicentre of all tourist destinations with its culture, beaches, nature and excellent hospitality in Asia. In addition, the comfortable weather of the region all through the year adds to its popularity amongst the travellers.

The Balinese are known for their love of the outdoors, and there is always something new to discover in central Bali. You can go on hikes up in altitude, view sunsets or try biking around town – all while experiencing new cultures. If you want to indulge in water sports within your comfort zone, then sea walking at Nusa Dua will get that adrenaline pumping one step at a time.

The best way to experience Bali is by taking advantage of its coastline. You can either head out into the sea or explore the nearby reefs, just a short boat ride away from Benoa Harbor. Bali is a traditional, cultural island. From its temples and paddy fields, you can explore Bali’s rich past while marvelling at how modern it looks today with rugged cliffs, serene beaches, lush forests, and not forgetting those fantastic sunsets.

There are plenty of luxury resorts to stay for tourists, but when in need of something rustic, then head just outside the towns where villages still exist from days gone by, offering visitors a chance to discover authentic Balinese culture first hand.

Maldives’ bright blue paradise islands with dreamy, crystal clear waters and oh so white sandy beaches are the ideal choice for our future holidays. The ‘one island one resort’ policy of the country coupled with intense safety measures will ensure the Maldives as a top destination for 2021-2.

Apart from stylishly lounging in your private over-water villa to filling your Instagram feed with casual to sexy photo shoots, do spend the mornings and late evenings (when the Sun has its UV dosage set to low) snorkelling and swimming in the shallow lagoons with colourful fish for company.

Beyond the reef, heading away from the drop-off and into the deep, the domain of the ocean’s gentle giants starts.

Getting Near Whale Sharks In Maldives

Raffles Maldives Meradhoo has added a new experience to encounter whale sharks when at the Maldives. Marine-life enthusiasts will marvel at the sight of whale sharks in the healthy reefs of the Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

The new experience will take you out on a traditional Dhoni across the warm Indian Ocean to meet the magnificent spotted sharks which are up to 12 metres in length. Embark on this bespoke journey and expect to encounter up to three whale sharks, the largest fish in the world.

The Raffles marine-life biologist will be on-hand to equant guests with the incredible creatures and identify passing sea life – including turtles, dolphins, and manta rays, all rich in the vast expanse of ocean. The two-hour encounter starts in the evening and includes an extensive array of canapés and beverages.

Apart from this once-in-a-lifetime experience to encounter whale sharks, the Raffles Maldives Meradhoo offers other interesting marine adventures that are closer to the resort. A ‘marine butler’ is available to every guest who will lead snorkelling tours of the resort’s two remarkable house reefs.

The Meradhoo island is one of the 87 tiny islands that make up the Gaafu Alifu atoll, one of the world’s largest and deepest atolls. The astoundingly clear, blissfully warm waters immediately surrounding the Raffles resort teem with a kaleidoscope of colourful fish and offers access to some of the most pristine reefs in the Maldives.

Things To Do In Gaafu Alifu, Maldives

Gaafu Alifu Atoll is the northern half of the Huvadhu Atoll, located towards the southern edge of the Maldives ring of atolls. Just above the equator, Huvadhu Atoll is famous for crystal clear waters and Sun that would fry you into oblivion. Tiger Strips, Koodhoo and Blue Bowls are three good surf spots in this atoll, suitable for beginners to intermediate surfers and accessible via boats.

Being the second-largest atoll in the Maldives, there are many dive sites located on the inner and outer reefs. The substantial outer reef offers diving opportunities such as exploring caves, steep drop-offs, pristine reefs and drift dive through channels. The atoll has a few PADI 5 Star dive centres that provide a full range of PADI scuba diving educational programs and equipment selection.

Other activities to keep one engaged in the middle of the Indian Ocean include parasailing, windsurfing, fishing from a traditional dhoni near the coast or deepsea fishing, canoeing past deserted islands in a see-through bottom kayak, submarine tours, or sampling living the good life in the resort’s spa sanctuary.

Raffles Maldives Meradhoo resort, open in late 2019, is accessible via a 55-minute domestic flight from Malé International Airport to Kaadedhdhoo Airport, followed by a 15-minute speedboat journey. As is customary when at any of the Raffles Hotels in the world, end the day at the Long Bar with their very own Maldivian Sling cocktail. ◼

The news has us all believing that there is no travel happening right now. Not quite, the world is not shut. Far from it, right now, you can have a safe, refreshing holiday in the Maldives.

India-Maldives air bubble agreement

After the latest ‘India-Maldives air bubble agreement’ for residents in India, SpiceJet has announced the introduction of two non-stop flights connecting Mumbai & Male. Effective 4th January 2021, flights will operate on every Monday, Thursday and Sunday. SG 91 will depart from Mumbai at 12.35 PM and reach Male at 3 PM (local time) while on return SG 92 will take off at 4 PM and reach Mumbai at 7.30 PM (local time). The airline will deploy its Boeing 737 aircraft to operate on this route.

SpiceJet is celebrating the launch of its new flights by announcing introductory all-inclusive starting fares of INR 9,012 (US$ 120) on Mumbai-Male and INR 9,501 (US$ 130) on Male-Mumbai route.

Residents in the Middle East

For residents in the Middle East, Emirates daily flight from Dubai to Male is the fastest way to reach your very own island escape. Qatar’s Safe Travel Bubble with the Maldives ensure the residents can travel between the two countries with ease, enjoy an exceptional holiday and return home with no need to quarantine.

Visas & Procedures

The Maldives has a sensible and tourist-friendly ‘Visa on arrival’ policy for all tourists visiting its sunny shores. The Maldives does not have the ‘pay $150 as non-refundable visa fees with your life’s paperwork submitted in application and hope for the best’ policy that other countries impose as status quo.

In this pre-vaccine era, travel rules may seem daunting but think of getting from Country A to Country B and returning in 4 blocks of activities.

Activities Before Departure: 1. Book a refundable flight and resort directly from the airline / hotel’s website. Try and avoid agencies or booking sites for now. 2. Get the negative PCR Test certificate within 72 hours before departure. 3. Complete the country’s online declaration forms.

Activities On Departure to the Maldives: 1. Take a rapid PCR test at the gate and get results within 15 mins to 45 mins. 2. Board the aircraft on receiving the negative result.

Activities On Arrival to the Maldives: 1. Head to the resort and enjoy your vacation.

Activities On Arrival to Home Country: 1. Take a PCR test if needed by home country & fill out their online travel declarations. 2. Take a PCR test at your home country airport.

As expected, one needs a negative PCR test before entering the Maldives. To enter the Maldives, the PCR test must be taken not more than 72 hours prior to the scheduled time of departure from the first port of embarkation en-route to the Maldives. The negative Covid-19 PCR test result must be attached while completing the ‘Traveler Health Declaration’ form, which has to be submitted online by all arriving passengers prior to arrival (but not exceeding 24 hours before arrival time), via IMUGA.

There is no need for another PCT test upon arrival at the airport in Male. Only those who have COVID-19 like symptoms, such as a temperature above 38 degrees celsius, coughing or sneezing, will be tested for COVID-19.

Tourists who do not have COVID-19 symptoms are not required to quarantine on arrival to the Maldives. It goes without saying that one needs to have a confirmed resort booking prior to arrival. Masks and social distancing are a norm everywhere, whether at the airport or in the hotel. Getting up close with the fishes while snorkelling in the Maldives and taking a selfie is highly encouraged!

It is worth noting for a moment that with so many Covid tests being done on ALL passengers at various stages of travel, and given that the Maldives has a ‘one resort on one island’ policy, heading to the Maldives for a vacation is SAFER than heading to your local supermarket for your weekly groceries.

Accumulate ‘Miles’ With National Loyalty Programme

The Maldives government has recently launched a first of its kind national loyalty programme called ‘Maldives Border Miles‘ that provides tourists with miles when they frequent the Indian Ocean nation. This programme is run independently of any airlines or hotel loyalty points programmes.

Maldives Border Miles Abaarana

Tourists enrolled in the three-tiered loyalty program will earn miles for activities, including visiting the Maldives during special occasions, spending more nights in the country and obtaining services from the programme partners.

The Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the programme are called ‘Aida’, ‘Antara’ and ‘Abaarana’ respectively. The miles redemption at this stage is unclear except for privileged immigration clearance on arrival and departure for Antara and Abaarana members.

Overwater villas and garden villas with access to private white sand beaches

As recently as 5th January 2021, there are more than 140 operating hotels and resorts, more than 130 dhonis liveaboard and yachts, 27 atolls and more than a 1,000 coral islands in the Maldives Archipelago just waiting to be explored.

The Maldives is an ideal location for snorkelling, scuba diving, a romantic getaway with luxurious villas, both on land with private beach access and over-water, for family get-together and reunion, or simply to soak in the sun and get the new year started. Being in the middle of the Indian Ocean does not mean doing away with creature comforts; the luxury hotels and resorts of Maldives boast excellent wine cellars, fine cuisine with top-notch restaurants and spas.

A selection of luxury hotels that need to be on your radar includes the Gili Lankanfushi, Lux North Male’ Atoll, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau and Raffles Maldives Meradhoo Resort.

Expect this destination to be ‘hot’ for all the right reasons during the coming months – we most certainly don’t need to wait for festivals or long weekends to head out for a break, especially after a horrible year that was 2020. ◼

Travel enthusiasts globally share a similar thought while contemplating their travels for 2020 and beyond – ‘will the trip materialise’. This year has been rough, undoubtedly, but as locations around the world are slowly reopening, travellers are getting into cars, planes, trains and yachts albeit the perceived risks — the pandemic is not able to extinguish the desire for travel.

Maldives, one of the rare Asian countries that recently reopened its borders for leisure travellers immediately observed jet-setters and enthusiastic honeymooners head to its beautiful atolls. The concept of social distancing is fairly straightforward for tourists to the Maldives simply because of the country’s policy of ‘one resort one island’. Several luxurious resorts welcomed their first guests in awe and absolute excitement.

Constance Halaveli Maldives, North Ari Atoll

The team at Constance Halaveli offered a warm welcome to returning guests. Constance, with two hideaways in the Maldives, is intimate, luxurious and perfectly represents the ‘sun, sand and sea’ theme. Within Constance Halaveli, safe distancing comes easy for guests with the 57 water villas, 9 beach villas, 19 beach villas or the lavish presidential beach villa.

Activities & Experiences: Movie night on the beach under a curtain of stars, snorkel amongst the abundant marine life and laze around the private sun terrace with regular dips in either the plunge pool or the ocean – follow your heart.

Four Seasons Resort Maldives

After launching an enhanced programme to ensure the safety of their guests, both the Four Seasons Resort Maldives opened their doors to welcome guests from all across the world. Apart from being surrounded by tropical greens and mesmerising ocean, the arriving guests can experience both their resorts on the same holiday – a few nights at Kuda Huraa resort, North Male Atoll while awaiting a seaplane transfer to Landaa Giraavaru at Baa Atoll.

Activities & Experiences: Learn about the initiatives to protect marine ecosystems at Marine Discovery Centre, head out for a scuba dive during the day and end the day with a spa therapy or cocktails by the sunset.

LUX* North Male Atoll

The surf season is in full swing and the island’s most thrilling waves await the return of their guests. LUX* North Male Atoll, with its own seasonal surf spot welcomes guests back. The returning guests are guaranteed an enjoyable summer in this paradise of penthouse villas and spectacularly designed spaces to play, relax and retreat.

Just you, your thoughts and the sound of the sea. The soothing sound of water and the rhythm of the ocean has long been used for meditation and mindfulness. Scientists have discovered that the gentle rhythm of ocean waves affects the rhythm of the neuronal waves in our brains, creating a more gentle pace of thought. #discoversoneva #experiencesoneva #soneva25 #sonevafushi #findyourhappyplace #findyourhappy #findthepositive #instabeaches #fortheoceans #maldives_ig #visitmaldives #maldivesinsider #maldivesresorts #maldivesislands #maldiveslovers #maldivesphotography #beautifulmaldives #instazen #wellnessjourney #innerstrength #mindfulmoment #balancedlife #meditationpractice 📸 @nosdoisnomundo
