Bamboo Rafting and Beyond: An Eco-Tourist’s Guide to Portland, Jamaica. Jamaica, the island nation nestled in the Caribbean Sea, is a cultural superpower steeped in rhythm, reggae and resonant history. It is the land of swaying palms, rolling hills, and a people known for their vibrancy and charm. In the heart of this paradise is the parish of Portland, renowned for its pristine landscapes and slow-paced, nature-centric lifestyle. My trip here was one of eco-tourism, a celebration of nature and local culture that left me spellbound.

Our adventure began on the banks of the Rio Grande, a shimmering expanse of water cutting through the lush greenery of the Jamaican countryside. Perched on a bamboo raft, we embarked on a custom tour that unfolded not just at the pace of the river’s flow but also to the rhythm of our hearts. This was a leisurely journey meant to be savoured, where the destination was as enticing as the voyage itself.

The rafts, previously used to transport bananas from the interior to the coast, were now repurposed for our journey. Skilled and licensed raft captains helmed the rafts, using long poles to navigate the meandering river. Each raft, four feet wide and twenty-five feet long, sported a bamboo seat that invited us to relax and let the current guide us downstream.

Our journey was punctuated by multiple opportunities to stop along the riverbanks at places that seemed too inviting to merely float past. Romantic spots such as Lover’s Lane invited us to disembark for a picnic, while other stretches beckoned us to take a dip in the cool, refreshing waters. Throughout, the scenic backdrop of the Blue Mountains in the distance and the banana and coconut trees lining the riverbanks provided a picturesque panorama that echoed rustic tranquillity and pastoral serenity.

From Bamboo Rafting to Jerk Chicken: A Cultural Journey in Portland, Jamaica

Our destination was Port Antonio, the capital city of Portland. Nestled on the hillsides, the city’s colourful houses were a delightful sight, their hues mirroring the vibrant pulse of reggae that finds its rhythm here. It was easy to imagine the beats of the music emanating from the heart of the city, flowing in harmony with the serenity of the surroundings.

Portland’s natural charm extends beyond the Rio Grande. Places such as Winnifred Beach and Frenchman’s Cove, with their azure waters, invite visitors to unwind. The vibrant ecosystem of Goblin Hill beckons exploration, while the mystical allure of the Blue Lagoon promises a dip into the fantastical. Reach Falls offers an immersion into the raw power and beauty of nature, and for the adventurous, horseback riding provides an alternative way to experience Portland’s landscape.

No journey to Portland is complete without indulging in the local cuisine. As we journeyed down the Rio Grande, we discovered a hidden gem – Belinda’s Café. Only accessible by bamboo raft, this rustic café is an eco-paradise for food lovers. The curried goat, rich and tender, was a delight.

At Cynthia’s at Winnifred Beach, we savoured the local favourite, Ackee and Salt Fish, an explosion of flavours that pay homage to Jamaican culinary traditions. Woody’s offered a contemporary twist with their burgers paired with sweet, ripe plantains. And at Gurleys at Boston, we enjoyed authentic Jamaican jerk chicken and curry lobster, each bite a testament to the island’s rich culinary heritage.

Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, is set to reopen in Riviera Maya next summer. Located on 200 acres of tropical jungle and white sand beaches, Maroma puts Mayan culture at the forefront, offering guests a unique and immersive experience. With its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, the Riviera Maya serves as the perfect backdrop for Maroma’s artistic vision.

Guests can expect Maroma to be a true hideaway, allowing them to escape and relax in luxury surrounded by the rustic beauty of the Mayan Riviera. Maroma’s highly anticipated reopening is just one example of the region’s ongoing commitment to creative expression and development.

Preserving heritage and masonry at Maroma, A Belmond Hotel

Belmond has tapped designer Tara Bernerd to lead their restoration project, emphasizing utilizing local artisans and indigenous materials to pay homage to Mexico’s rich heritage. Maroma’s contemporary crafts and carefully sourced materials work harmoniously with the original design and architecture, including white stucco buildings aligned with Mayan Sacred Geometry.

The result is a truly authentic experience that channels the healing energy of the jungle and sea. Maroma’s commitment to preserving local culture sets it apart as a destination for those seeking not just relaxation but also a connection to the roots of the land they are visiting.

The property’s redesign, featuring curved lines and organic forms, pays tribute to its natural landscapes. Maroma’s three pools have also been redesigned, using hand-made Sukabumi tiles in vibrant turquoise tones reminiscent of the region’s natural cenotes.

Maroma’s 72 accommodations are spread across a private stretch of white sand beach, including ten new waterfront suites with their own private pool and garden. Maroma invites guests to escape into their own slice of paradise and be inspired by the beauty of nature.

Maroma, A Belmond Hotel – A wellness destination in Yucatan

Nestled in a jungle oasis and surrounded by the energy of the wide open sea, Maroma’s fully renovated biophilic space – the first Guerlain Spa in Latin America – offers healing rituals from nature, ancient practices, and even the sacred Melipona bee – revered by Mayans for over 3,000 years as a symbol of spiritual resonance.

Maroma’s Spa menu has been designed around the Mayan wellness philosophy and includes sound and healing rituals. Along with access to the spa’s tranquil facilities, Maroma also offers a holistic wellness retreat complete with daily workshops in meditation, movement, and yoga.

Cuisine at Maroma

At Casa Mayor, Mexican-born Executive Chef Daniel Camacho brings his expertise and passion for Mexican cuisine to Maroma. Drawing inspiration from his childhood experiences in Mexico, Camacha will source 90% of his ingredients from the country, with nearly half coming from the Yucatán peninsula.

In addition to utilizing fresh produce, he will also emphasise sustainability – obtaining freshly caught seafood from Amigos de Sian Ka’an, an organization dedicated to conserving natural resources and promoting sustainable development. With such attention to both flavour and the origin of ingredients, diners can expect an exceptional dining experience at Casa Mayor.

At Maroma, traditional Mexican cuisine will be given a modern twist. Guests can expect vibrant dishes like seafood towers and Michoacan corundas, as well as Jalisco-style Birria and chocolate cake with Oaxacan black mole, flamed with house mezcal. This reimagined cuisine at Maroma offers a unique dining experience for patrons looking to try something new. In addition, Freddy’s Bar at the beach will continue to channel the vibrant spirit of the Riviera Maya, filled with live music and DJ sets, fresh seafood and cocktails.

Building on biodiversity at Maroma

At Maroma, biodiversity is more than just a buzzword – it is a way of life. As a result, the resort has implemented various initiatives to promote and protect biodiversity, including expanding resident bee hives and creating a sanctuary for the endangered Melipona bee. Not only does this help to preserve the local ecology, but it also provides educational guest experiences and improves Maroma’s culinary offerings.

The resort takes conservation efforts beyond bees with turtle conservation initiatives and preservation of the surrounding flora and fauna. Maroma’s “Women for Bees” program introduces Guerlain’s Bee School to Yucatan communities, empowering locals to join in the effort to protect biodiversity. By incorporating biodiversity into every aspect of its operations, Maroma sets a shining example for responsible tourism.

Showcasing Mexican Artists at Maroma

In continuing its commitment to highlighting Mexican culture and supporting the arts, the resort has commissioned an inaugural photography series featuring some of Mexico’s talented photographers, including Patricia Lagarde, Javier Hinojosa, Ilán Rabchinskey, and Margot Kalach. The series captures the beauty of Riviera Maya through the unique perspective of these talented photographers. Their works will be exhibited at prestigious art events, including Art Basel in Miami, Zona Maco in Mexico City and Photo London.

Maroma, located 30 minutes from Cancun International Airport, is the perfect destination for relaxing and exploring the Yucatan Peninsula. The region is known for its stunning white sand beaches and turquoise waters, making it a popular spot for sunbathers and water-sport enthusiasts alike.

Guests can also take advantage of Maroma’s proximity to nearby sightseeing hotspots like Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza, with less than a two-hour drive to each location. Maroma is part of the Belmond brand, which includes two other Caribbean resorts, Belmond La Samanna in St Martin and Belmond Cap Juluca in Anguilla.

Maroma offered a rare opportunity to reimagine this iconic hotel, with its rich and storied history. We sought to retain and enhance the original character, working with local artisans, whilst simultaneously incorporating a contemporary elegance, a warmth that also has a sense of home, that speaks to the needs of the Belmond guest for generations to come.” says Bernerd.

If you love Disney cruises, you’re going to love the newest, biggest and boldest ship yet – Disney Wish. Setting sail in July 2022, this magnificent vessel will please everyone in your family. With plenty of activities and accommodations for all ages, plus exciting new features never before seen on a Disney cruise ship, Wish is sure to be a wish come true for all who experience her.

The Disney Wish is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship, infused with more storytelling than ever. Disney imagineers took family vacations adding one-of-a-kind entertainment and innovative “firsts” from bow to stern.

The Disney Wish will have AquaMouse, the first Disney attraction at sea aboard the Disney Wish. There will also be “Swim”-finity and beyond in a new Toy Story-themed waterplay district for the little ones. And for the foodies in the family, there are three brand-new family restaurants on board Disney Cruise Line. The Disney Wish sails its maiden voyage on July 14, followed by three- and four-night cruises to Nassau, Bahamas, and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, from Port Canaveral, Florida.

AquaMouse – First Disney attraction at sea aboard the Disney Wish

Disney Cruise Line takes fun in the sun to the next level on the Disney Wish with the debut of AquaMouse, a brand-new family water attraction that will bring to life the adventures of “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” animated shorts like never before. Additionally, three themed districts offer fun water features, quick and casual dining options, and dedicated space for families, children and adults to relax and soak up the sun.

Complete with show scenes, lighting, special effects, and splashtacular surprises, this first-of-its-kind water ride sends guests on a fun family adventure through 760 feet of winding tubes suspended high above the upper decks.

“Swim”-finity and beyond in a new Toy Story-themed waterplay district

Children can have a tub-full of fun in the Toy Story Splash Zone, a fantastic water playground where Woody, Buzz and friends are adorably reimagined as larger-than-life rubber bath toys, moving and spraying water at kids’ whim. Inspired by the Disney and Pixar short “Partysaurus Rex,” this bathtub-themed splash zone combines the Old West of Woody’s Roundup with the intergalactic world of Buzz Lightyear, featuring two toddler-sized slides and pop jets, geysers and bubblers galore.

Three Brand-New Family Restaurants on the Disney Wish

With a debut of three brand-new family restaurants, the Disney Wish will take guests on a remarkable culinary journey to an enchanted “Frozen” kingdom, an Avengers technology showcase and the golden age of Hollywood.

Arendelle, A Frozen Dining Adventure

Arendelle, A Frozen Dining Adventure

Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure is Disney’s first “Frozen”-themed theatrical dining experience, bringing the kingdom of Arendelle to life through immersive live entertainment — featuring favourite characters like Elsa, Anna, Kristoff and Olaf — and world-class cuisine infused with Nordic influences. Families are invited to attend a royal engagement party for Queen Anna and Kristoff, picking up the story where Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2” left off.

Disney Wish Worlds of Marvel

Disney Wish Worlds of Marvel

Worlds of Marvel is the first Marvel cinematic dining adventure, where guests play an interactive role in an action-packed Avengers mission unfolding around them, complete with a worldly menu inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Avengers: Quantum Encounter” follows Ant-Man and The Wasp as they embark on their first public speaking engagement on behalf of the Avengers. Every table at Worlds of Marvel features an interactive Quantum Core, a brand-new device that can cause objects to shrink and grow remotely. Guests assist Ant-Man and The Wasp as they attempt some small-scale trials, perhaps shrinking oversized luggage for easy stateroom storage.

Named for the year The Walt Disney Company was founded, 1923 is an elegant celebration of the company’s legacy, paying homage to the golden age of animation and offering a tasteful tribute to its Californian heritage.

Combining classic Hollywood glamour with a dash of Disney whimsy, 1923 features two lavishly appointed dining rooms, aptly named for the men behind the magic of the original film studio — Walt and Roy Disney. The rooms are adorned with more than 1,000 drawings, props and other tools of the trade, providing an inside look at the evolution of Disney animation from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to “Frozen 2.”

Disney Wish

Disney Wish

The Disney Wish also features new food and beverage options on the upper decks, including Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods — the perfect place for families to grab a quick bite for lunch, dinner or anytime in between. This open-air eatery features five themed food stalls: Mickey’s Smokestack Barbecue, Donald’s Cantina, Daisy’s Pizza Pies, Goofy’s Grill and Sweet Minnie’s Ice Cream.

Season themed cruises on board  Disney Cruise Line

Halloween on the High Seas returns to Disney Cruise Line from mid-September through October 2022. On select sailings across the fleet, guests can dress up and join Disney characters in their Halloween costumes at Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party; enjoy themed food, beverages and crafts; and immerse themselves in a ghostly ship takeover with elaborate decor and a magical Pumpkin Tree.

Halloween on the High Seas – The Pumpkin Tree Aboard the Disney Dream

Halloween on the High Seas – The Pumpkin Tree Aboard the Disney Dream

From early November through December, the Disney Cruise Line fleet is decked from bow-to-stern with holiday cheer and entertainment during Very Merrytime Cruises. Holiday magic is unwrapped for the whole family with festive holiday decor, favourite characters in their finest holiday attire and a special visit from Santa Claus.

The green credentials of Disney Wish

Disney Wish

Disney Wish

From bow to stern, Walt Disney Imagineers designed the Disney Wish to be among the most fuel and energy-efficient cruise ships on the water. Through a combination of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and numerous advances in ship design, Disney Cruise Line’s (DCL) newest ship is estimated to be nearly 30 percent more fuel efficient and emit approximately 20 percent less greenhouse gases.

Hotel Bel-Air, the epitome of luxury and style, is hosting a photo exhibition featuring the work of world-renowned celebrity photographer Timothy White. The exhibition is complimentary and open to the public from June 1st to July 31st, seven days a week.

Guests will have the opportunity to view photographs of some of Hollywood’s most iconic celebrities, including Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Liza Minelli and Robin Williams, with all photographs available for purchase. This is a rare opportunity to see the work of one of the world’s most sought-after photographers up close and personal.

Who is Timothy White?

So often, we are told that a picture is worth a thousand words, but what happens when the photographer behind the lens is world-renowned Timothy White? We are graced with pure magic. His three decades of experience in the industry shines through in every shot- from the playful yet candid moments of legendary actors to the fresh-faced innocence of upcoming stars.

There is a sense of intimacy and easiness in each frame that can only be attributed to his skill as not just a technician but as an artist. Add to that his unfettered access to some of the most influential people of our time, and you have a recipe for greatness. The result is a visually arresting collection of images that manages to capture a moment in history and the very essence of human nature.

Timothy White’s behind the scene interaction with celebrities

When White was a “young pup” in the business, he was sent to photograph Sidney Poitier. He was in awe of Poitier’s talent and dignity and was stunned when the actor asked him to help choose a wardrobe for a poolside shoot. The two would work together many times over the years. White’s admiration for Poitier’s professionalism and talent was evident each time they worked together, and their mutual respect led to a lasting friendship. White has said that photographing Poitier was always a pleasure and that he feels lucky to have had the opportunity to capture the actor’s unique presence on film. Thanks to their collaboration, White has some of his most iconic images, and Poitier has some of his most memorable performances.

The photographs on display represent a cross-section of White’s vast archive and demonstrate the deep trust and relationships he has built with his subjects over the years, including with Sophia Loren, who graciously allowed him to direct her in a phenomenal shoot that featured her running on the beach, laying on a rock, and even jumping in the water and ruining her gown.

Also featured is a photograph captured of Brad Pitt, who went on a motorcycle trip with White. The selection also includes a portrait of Whitney Houston taken during the many times she worked with him throughout her life, a powerfully emotive image of James Gandolfini, and a photo of Jay-Z captured in the days before he grew into the mogul and legend he was to become.

“It is an absolute honour to host this exhibition at Hotel Bel-Air,” said White. “I’m all about the history, and I have always been very aware of the hotels in this town – The Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Bel-Air – and their powerful representation of the history of Hollywood. This exhibition felt like such a natural synergy between my life, my career, my legacy, and the hotel’s life and legacy.”

Behind the ivy-covered walls of the Hotel Bel-Air, part of the Dorchester Collection, lies a Hollywood haven where celebrities can escape the hustle and bustle of Tinseltown. Since opening its doors in 1946, the hotel has maintained a reputation for Old Hollywood glamour, understated luxury, and privacy that has attracted stars and royalty alike.

Over the years, the Bel-Air has been home to some of Hollywood’s most beloved icons, including Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe. Today, the hotel’s celebrity connection endures, as it remains a favourite refuge for A-listers looking to escape the paparazzi and enjoy a little privacy. Thanks to its storied past and impeccable service, the Hotel Bel-Air continues to be one of Hollywood’s most cherished landmarks. ◼
