More than ever, luxury cruise fans are eager to return to sailing – provided all the safety measures have been put in place. For destinations far away from cities, how about exploring the shoreland of Iceland in a luxurious cruise?

The French cruise operator Ponant, a world leader in luxury expeditions, is all set to resume cruising. Starting from July till August 2020, Ponant is launching a series of all-new expedition cruises circumnavigating Iceland. Each cruise will start and conclude in Reykjavik. The seven voyages will showcase the brand-new Explorer Class luxury expedition ship, Le Bellot – the fifth in a series of six new Explorer class ships.

The 180-guest Le Bellot will explore the coast and shoreline of Iceland during 7-night itineraries revealing the dramatic glaciers, fjords, waterfalls, and volcanoes of the mythic Nordic island nation.

Highlights of this Icelandic itinerary include Vatnajökull National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and crossing the Arctic Circle to observe whales, orcas, seals, and Atlantic puffins that make up some of the wildlife in this remote region.

A team of naturalist guides will be on board to share their knowledge of the fauna and flora of the regions visited. The expedition will also include zodiac outings, hikes, volcanic beaches, rugged cliffs, glaciers, icebergs, and natural warm water springs.

Realising the need to be ecologically responsible, Le Bellot represents a new generation of cruise ships featuring sophisticated technology and refined design. Le Bellot comes with only 92 staterooms and suites, all with a balcony or a private terrace.

Inspired by Jules Verne, the ship is equipped with a multisensory lounge that enables guests to comfortably experience the surrounding subaquatic world to enjoying a relaxed environment onboard, the luxurious ship offers a civilised way for guests to explore remarkably remote destinations in comfort and style.

Safety First: Sail with Confidence

To successfully prepare to sail back and resume services, Ponant has collaborated with the Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire (IHU) Méditerranée Infection of Marseilles, one of the world’s leading centres in the field of infectious diseases, as well as with the Battalion of Marine Firemen of Marseilles and Bureau Veritas, a world leader in testing, inspection and certification (TIC).

The fleet is equipped with high-level hospitals aboard the ships, made up of a state-of-the-art medical infrastructure (radiology, biology and even resuscitation devices, etc.) that goes beyond all current touristic standards. An expert medical team made up of at least one doctor and a nurse, available around the clock, are present in these hospitals.

Ponant relies on the provision and maintenance of a “Covid-Safe” area around its ships, a hermetic sanitary bubble, thanks to the rollout of three layers of shields: stringent onboard access conditions, rigorous sanitary protocols throughout the cruise as well as daily checks (guests, equipment, ships). It includes the implementation of a health check for 100% of the people on board (guests and crew members) and filtering and disinfection at boarding in a guest circuit that has been entirely redesigned for before, during and after the cruise.

In addition, upon arrival at the airport in Iceland, all passengers must take a PCR serology test and obtain a negative result to gain access to the vessel. ◼

Vacations are precious, especially after the outbreak of the pandemic. Travellers are trying to maximise each and every experience in a carefully crafted manner – keeping ‘safe’ modes of travel on priority.

Travellers also want to experience new places, in the luxury of their own exclusive, controlled environment without the hassle of transiting. There is virtually no other curated offering in the travel industry like a cruise to satisfy this current requirement. One thing is given – cruises are an entertainment hub and there are no dull moments once you are onboard a luxury cruise ship.

From enjoying the refreshing, cool sea breeze and an endless horizon on deck to a wide range of entertainment activities on board, most of us would give anything right now to escape on a ship and sail away, with all the best-in-class safety and social distancing norms in place.

Michael Goh, President of Dream Cruises & Head of International Sales, Genting Cruise Lines

Michael Goh, President of Dream Cruises & Head of International Sales, Genting Cruise Lines

“Cruising is less stressful in the times of COVID-19 because the immigration is much more simplified as compared to flights – you just got to check in and check out once and then we go to different places. It also allows you to go from where you are to any remote island destination without having to change across multiple modes of transport. It just means less exposure,” said Michael Goh, President of Dream Cruises & Head of International Sales, Genting Cruise Lines.

With the news of Dream Cruises resuming operations, it has become imperative for cruise companies to devise more exciting experiences ever for their guests keeping social distancing and safety as paramount perimeters.

The Big Announcement: Dream Cruises, the first cruise to resume sailing in Taiwan

Dream Cruises, Asia’s premier cruise fleet does all of this impeccably. With its grand restart, Dream Cruises becomes the first cruise line to resume operations with Explorer Dream operating two and three-night “Taiwan Island-Hopping” itineraries. Beginning 26 July 2020, Dream Cruises is rolling out safety initiatives across its entire fleet to bring its world-class cruise to a whole new level.

Explorer Dream

Explorer Dream

These enhanced measures include, perfectly ventilated accommodations, transformed dining venues with safe distancing in place, reinvented spaces across the fleet apart from exceptional service as a prerequisite for travelling in style and the lap of luxury.

“All our cruise ships have a robust air ventilation system to provide our guests with utmost levels of safety and hygiene. 100% external fresh air is filtered and supplied to each guest, crew cabin and onboard public areas. No re-circulation of air is done between cabins or within the ship. Air filters and cooling coils are thoroughly checked, cleaned and replaced to ensure healthy air quality,” explained Michael.

Genting Cruise Lines announced the restart of cruise operations for Dream Cruises with Explorer Dream earlier this month. The cruise will depart from Keelung to Penghu, Matzu and Kinmen islands. “After months of detailed planning with the authorities to ensure the safety and health of guests and crew, we appreciate the approval of Explorer Dream resuming cruise operations in Taiwan,” added Michael.

Singapore Tourism Board has been very engaging. It has been working on a lot of schemes to support the tourism industry ahead of the pandemic. In Singapore, Dream Cruises looks forward to resume operations by the last quarter of 2020.

Why Taiwan?

“Taiwan became an ideal destination for Genting Cruise Lines to resume Dream Cruises’ operations. Taiwan’s low numbers of COVID-19 cases compared to global figures apart from the country being extremely popular among travellers made it an obvious choice,” said Michael.

To celebrate Taiwan’s success in controlling the pandemic, the local authorities took steps to reinvigorate their economy and open it up for tourism. To support this endeavour and welcome its friendly locals, Dream Cruises is offering select island-hopping cruises calling on the popular ports and islands of Peng Hu, Matsu Island and Kinmen where Taiwanese guests will again be able to enjoy refreshing short getaways on carefree ocean voyages.

Safety First

The coronavirus outbreak has also brought with it a whole set of challenges. For cruising enthusiasts and first-time travellers, it is without a doubt imperative to be assured that the cruise ship they plan to travel on is safe and well equipped to enhance the overall experience.

To welcome guests and reassure them of the safety, “Explorer Dream has undergone a thorough deep cleaning and observation of strict quarantine procedures for her crew, in accordance with Taiwan’s regulations prior to resuming sailing,” said Michael.

The cruise has taken significant steps to safeguard the well-being of guests with stringent health screening processes and guidelines before embarkation, disembarkation and social distancing measures on board. With stringent safety precautions in place, going on Explorer Dream feels far safer as compared to going to your local supermarket.

The cruise line will also work with local authorities for quick results in dealing with any medical emergencies that may arise. “Isolated wards are available in the Medical Centre and cabins can be converted into quarantine rooms if required. Contaminated items and medical waste are properly sealed and disposed of according to health and safety guidelines. Also, medical equipment and waste bins are cleaned, disinfected and washed twice daily with hospital grade disinfectant,” informed Michael.

Explorer Dream’s Palace Restaurant

Explorer Dream’s Palace Restaurant

On safe distancing on board and when heading to shore excursions, Michael elaborated “The current occupancy level has been maintained at 50-70% and people are divided into small groups while going on excursions. This has been done to avoid excessive crowding on islands and maintain safe distancing at the same time.

Food handling and Buffets

As a preventive measure guest seating will ensure ample spacing and disposable cutlery will be provided upon request.

“All the cruise ships will have the facility of take-aways that the guests can enjoy on the deck. We have introduced self-service at all F&B restaurants for safety purposes. Breakfast buffets and beverages will be served to guests by crew members wearing face masks and disposable gloves only,” said Michael.

Entertainment and Recreational Activities

To enjoy the various entertainment activities onboard, guests onboard are advised to pre-book for smooth functioning. “Guests capacity will be limited to half the venue capacity to provide ample space between guests. In theatres, social distancing will be practised. We will take in limited number of guests and more shows will be organised to manage spacing. Family units can, however, be seated together,” he added.

The new safety measures at Explorer Dream are progressive and takes modern luxury cruising into the post-COVID normal.

Explorer Dream’s Palace Deluxe Suite

Explorer Dream’s Palace Deluxe Suite

The Palace, a ship-within-a-ship

Inspired by its international, luxury sister brand Crystal Cruises, Dream Cruises had, in 2016, implemented a collection of new benefits and services to enhance the travelling experience of guests in its exclusive enclave, ‘The Palace’.

“We received an overwhelming response from Asian consumers when we launched ‘The Palace’. From there we noticed how people enjoy “experiential luxury”, of enjoying the experience at the comfort of their own space – be it dining or outdoor jacuzzi,” Michael emphasised.

“The Palace is a ship-within-a-ship with nearly 10,000 square metres of suited, private restaurant, gym, sundeck, pools and other facilities featuring exclusive dining, dedicated butlers and a lot more. True to today’s scenario, we are foreseeing a huge demand for The Palace,” Michael added.

Spotting a shining opportunity in this crisis

Michael Goh sees every crisis as an opportunity. He is optimistic and considers the current situation as an opportunity to implement stringent preventive measures across the fleet while delivering an experience worth a lifetime for the guests in a cost-effective manner.

If you are considering booking an escape to refresh, think about taking a cruise to Taiwan in Explorer Dream’s ‘The Palace’. Be among a select few who get to experience a vacation in 2020, and in the process get fascinated about cruising to destinations even further away in 2021 and beyond. ◼

Wake up to the distinct scent of the sea and drift off to dreamland as the breeze whispers, “Don’t be afraid, I am here. Close your eyes, breathe the salty air, and let the spirit of the ocean move you.”

Aboard the Blue Moon Catamaran in the middle of the pristine waters off Phuket, this is precisely how I felt as I embark on a day trip amongst the jiggered rock islands along the Eastern bounds of the Andaman Sea.

Escaping the hustle of Singapore in February, I blocked a quick weekend rendezvous in Phuket and cruised aboard this private catamaran with my family amongst the tiny, beautiful islands dotting around Phuket. Little did I know that it will be the last overseas trip I would undertake before the world moved into lockdown. This quiet, serene and refreshing getaway turned out to be a perfect opportunity for me to bond with my family, while in the company of stunning blue backdrops melting away to an orange sunset.

Sailing from Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket to Phang Nga Bay

We boarded the luxurious 52 feet long catamaran ‘Blue Moon’ early in the morning from the Ao Po Grand Marina located on the eastern edge of Phuket. Manned by a well-trained crew of two and complete with 5 en-suite cabins, an ample salon with panoramic views, good sized deck areas to relax with two large bow trampolines that doubled as hammocks for lounging, being on board this yacht felt more like travelling in a sleek apartment with the blue sea as companion. Our Andaman adventure had begun.

Phang-nga is famous for spectacular scenery with limestone cliffs dramatically rising out of emerald green water. There are caves, secret lagoons and tiny secluded beaches, a few of which are still awaiting discovery. Phang Nga Bay is located 75 kilometres northeast of Phuket and is a national park surrounded by hundreds of unique limestone islands with names to match their shapes. In addition, there are magical stalactite caves and countless rocks and sea caves.

We were in awe of the beautiful island scapes surrounding Phuket and with a carefree agenda in mind, requested the Captain to explore the near-by islands at a leisurely speed, an advantage of sailing on your own yacht – there are no time tables to keep up with. Captain Jim knew exactly what we had in mind and set a gentle pace for the rest of the day. He suggested we explore the caves & secret lagoons at Koh Panak island, an experience, he promised, would take us up close and within the limestone towers.

Secret Lagoons and Sea Caves

Finding the entrance of sea caves within the base of limestone cliffs, exploring their dark pathways and finding oneself emerging into a hollow ‘hong’, a quiet and meditative sanctuary locked within a limestone karst island, with the sea cave the sole entrance and exit that ‘locks’ itself with high tide – this is an adventure best done with specialists on hand. Our brave Captain Jim, knowledgeable, experienced and well equipped, lead us – the fearful city dwellers – cautiously through dark winding pathways, littered with age old stalagmites and puddles of water on the rock floor. The only sound we could hear was water dripping from the ceiling of the cave, a constant reminder that the cave’s occupant – the tide – would be arriving soon.

A few minutes later, we emerged into the ‘hong’ – a large, secret opening enclosed by tall cliffs and the open blue sky for ceiling. No passing boat would have known that we were here. The sound of bird and the sight of a few mangrove trees and shrubs growing within the cracks of the cliff hinted of life in this stealthy hideaway. If imaginations were played out, this may have centuries ago, doubled as a villain’s lair or the ‘X’ on a pirate’s treasure map. Not in control of time nor tide, we hurried out back to the entrance, just in time to witness the water rise steadily by over half a meter and seal off the pathway and the cave entrance.

Ao Phang Nga National Park is home to many such caverns and caves, both discovered and those that have not been explored yet. We could have easily spent the entire day in this location, but such is the beauty of the surrounding jade-coloured water that called for us to continue exploring.

As Thailand opens its borders for tourists and a need for social distancing is in everyone’s mind, chartering a catamaran over the weekend is an excellent option to explore and unwind.

Back in the comfort of our luxurious catamaran, we refuelled and refreshed with Chef Nok at hand to treat us to a sumptuous feast of authentic vegetarian local cuisine. Our lazy day on board continued as Captain Jim charted our afternoon journey amidst the islands of Phang Nha Bay. We were at ease, playing hide and seek amongst the labyrinth of uninhibited rock islands. The protruding cliffs hanging precariously over the sea kept us amused as we relaxed on the two trampoline hammocks at the bow of the catamaran. With a canvas canopy sheltering us from the tropical sun and a strong breeze keeping everyone cool, our steady pace across the bay dissolved the afternoon into a sweet nothing – a ‘Dolce Vita’ moment experienced.

Sailing in this luxurious catamaran, Blue Moon, comes with its advantages. Apart from an expert staff on hand that ensures peace of mind, security, local knowledge and expertise, the catamaran is well equipped with snorkelling gear (masks and fins) and kayaks to double the fun. Having a charter adds to the luxury of not following a schedule or a direction laid out in an itinerary. If the green spec of island on the far left with a tiny cove appeals to the senses, the Captain is on hand to oblige at a moment’s notice. The shallow draft of the catamaran at 5 feet allows it to access remote locations which an ordinary single-hull yacht or a tourist ferry would generally avoid.

With five en-suite luxurious cabins, four of which are fitted with queen size beds & one with two single bunks and vast deck areas to enjoy, the Blue Moon catamaran is perfect for a family of ten. Blue Moon catamaran by Simpson Yacht Charter is a luxurious and a fun way to explore the islands that surround Phuket over either a day or a long weekend.

With the need to ensure social distance is maintained and general guidelines to avoid crowds, I am of the opinion that exploring Phuket’s many islands and waterways on your own private yacht is a safer and far more appealing activity as compared to visiting the usual tourist zones within Phuket. To explore, unwind and refresh with scenery that’s agreeable for the 1974 Bond, you are in for a treat the moment you step onboard.

Apart from the day trips, Simpson Yacht Charter has designed many more luxurious itineraries with the Blue Moon catamaran in mind that ranges from a weekend trip to a 15-day adventure. For a long weekend getaway, you fly in to Phuket on a Thursday night with dinner at the marina and then drinks on the boat. The crew makes final preparations to sail on the Friday morning while is enjoying breakfast at the marina. Friday’s ‘hectic’ schedule has fun slated for every hour of the day. Sail and snorkel along the coral reefs of Phuket and head back to land for dinner. Head out to a quiet bay for after-dinner drinks on board in the company of stars overhead and gentle waves; the crew sets the mood with candles, wine & cheese and anything else one desires. Saturday is all about cruising the Andaman Sea making stops along the way as per the desire of the day – snorkel amongst the marine life in national parks or snooze on a hammock with a chilled Champagne close by. The catamaran’s WIFI ensures all the moments get captured on Instagram on the fly. Saturday’s leisure spills over to Sunday, with the catamaran heading back to the marina as per the flight schedule out of Phuket.

The 15-day itinerary allows one to comprehensively cover the bay that includes Ko Racha Yaï, Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta, Ko Muk, Ko Rok Nok, Ko Ha Yaï and Ko Kaï where one can walk from one island to another during low tide. For getting to experience crossing international waters from Thailand to Malaysia, their 12 day Phuket to Langkawi itinerary covers islands and beaches such as Ko Lipe Butang archipelago that are far away from tourist tracks and include marine parks that are very much pristine and rated as among the best in the world.

A private cruise on board a luxurious yacht can become a case of ‘plan, experience and repeat’.

Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Evrima and Regent’s Seven Seas Splendor

Like a curtsy, Virgin Voyages is set to launch its first cruise, Scarlet Lady, the first of its future fleet dubbed as the Lady Ships–or, as the British would say, “Your ladyship,” – a tribute to the brand’s heritage. Scarlet Lady, a silvery-grey wonder with bright touches of red, is set to arrive at Port Miami and will sail through a Caribbean itinerary from April 2020, just in time for Sir Richard Branson’s birthday voyage. Scarlet Lady will navigate the world of the Mayans in a five-day voyage to Costa Maya, Mexico, and another five dazzling days to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

The adult-by-design cruise is packed with more than twenty dining venues, fitness classes, and RockStar suites – aesthetics brought about by some of the most sought-after interior designers, artists and architects. The Massive Suite woos with its guitar-embellished music room, and views of the ocean from every angle of the suite, a massive terrace, an outdoor shower and a runway outdoor table that can otherwise be used for dancing. The tiny downside – Virgin Voyages above 18 year old policy leaves family oriented groups with pre-teens or teenagers looking for other cruise line options.

The swanky hospitality brand The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection baptises the new decade with its league of own luxury cruise yachts, with Evrima, the first mega-yacht projected to sail the sun-kissed Mediterranean Sea in June 2020. This luxury voyage, a treat to the world’s most savvy traveller, sails through the mythical waters’ concealed harbours and takes a peek at its treasured ruins gliding by the quaint houses on cliffs, the white-washed enclaves of Santorini and the flower-draped columns of the Pantheon. As the yacht anchors by the harbour, one can take a stroll along the limestone cliffs, or walk into the charming fishing villages while breathing the fresh scent of the nearby orchard.

Investing on intimacy, Ritz-Carlton Evrima takes pride in its 149 suites, all packed with their own balcony, with ten high-end dining venues, including one from the three-Michelin-starred restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg designed by Chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua. It is an intimate yachting and cruising adventure that aims to create luxury travel experiences with a decadent service and blissful itineraries.

Regent is all set to add Seven Seas Splendor as the fleet’s fifth ship, with supermodel Christie Brinkley serving as Godmother to the ship and performing the christening ceremony in Miami on 21 February. The 375 all-suite, all-balcony cruise ship promises an intimate, premium experience with relaxing views even from the comfort of your own suite. A bit of solitude when cruising the seas is only but second nature.

Life is always better in first class, and this cruise line’s version goes by the name of ‘Regent Suite’. The entitlements, perks and comforts in this category make for a cruise that could easily be an experience in one’s lifetime that will go unsurpassed. The proof is in the pudding and here is another reason to look forward to 2020 – the year that Seven Seas Splendor set sail. The 2020 season will see her sail the Caribbean and Mediterranean, anchoring at famous ports such as Miami, Cabo San Lucas, Valencia, Monet Carlo, Corfu, Santorini and Istanbul.

Life on board is set for pamper-speed when at Regent Suite. This ‘room’ is an indulgent stretch of more than 4,400 square feet endowed with future-forward amenities and Caesar-style decor. Like a penthouse, the suite is made complete with decadent living and dining spaces ornate with Italian marble, curated art and handcrafted furnishings. The spa, gilded with gold accents, is decked with an exclusive sauna, steam room, two loungers, and a multi-jet shower. The bedroom allures with a gloriously handcrafted bed worth $200,000 from Hästens.

A personal butler attends all the requests, a personal car and guide to tour at every port, unlimited in-suite spa, complimentary 1 night pre cruise hotel package, guaranteed reservation each night in speciality restaurants – the list goes on. The essential free unlimited wifi is also included. When on a Transocean cruise, one wouldn’t want to be caught out with no network to access and upload the latest selfies on Instagram. A multi-million dollar art collection, culinary arts kitchen with demonstrations by master chef instructors, speciality restaurants are just some of the entertainments on-board that keep everyone engaged. ◼

Pull anchor and sail for Indonesia’s remote islands and marine life rich waters on one of the archipelago’s most luxurious phinisis.

With well over 17,000 islands spread across three time zones, Indonesia is one of the world’s largest archipelagos. It’s also one of the most biodiverse, both on land and in the depths of the cerulean sea.

The Coral Triangle spanning the waters of Indonesia, Philippines and Solomon Islands is particularly bountiful with hundreds of types of coral, six of the world’s seven turtle species and more than 2,000 species of colourful reef fish. These facts alone are enough to bring people here and with such scope for exploration of uninhabited islands, it’s the sailing yachts known as phinisis that are the favoured way to get around.

Charters designed with the luxury traveller in mind sail through these vast regions according to the time of year, passing from Raja Ampat to the Komodo Islands and exploring the Spice Islands in-between.

A voyage through Raja Ampat is among the most extraordinary journeys you can take by sea. Just off the tip of Bird’s Head Peninsula in West Papua, over 1,500 wild forested islands and cays sit amid cerulean waters home to a kaleidoscope of coral reefs so rich in marine life, they’re thought to have the highest recorded marine diversity on Earth.

I begin my journey here on the new phinisi, Prana by Atzaro, in Sorong, leaving the busy port for the open sea and clusters of sparsely populated islands. Our first port of call is Mioskon, a bat inhabited heart-shaped island with waters known for excellent diving. It’s close to here in the village of Saporkrem that I set out on an early hike to see the bird of paradise at first light and visit huts lining a jetty jutting out to sea.

Over the next few days, I dive on the colourful reef of Yenbuba, scale the limestone slope of Wayag to see the view Raja Ampat is famous for and stop by Aljui Bay for a guided tour of Atlas pearl farm. From here, I dive down to the coral wall of Wofoh, drink coconut water on a deserted beach and return to the boat for a movie under the stars. We sail to Piaynemo for the final day, hiking the steps to a platform commanding astounding island views before diving on the most spectacular reef I’ve ever seen, Melissa’s Garden.

Life beneath the water’s surface in Raja Ampat

Each seven-night voyage here comes with an 18-strong crew. Hosts are on hand to attend to you every need, chefs whip up Indonesian-inspired fine dining cuisine and therapists provide massages in the Anne Sémonin spa. Dive instructors and guides then take you out each day, with the course the ship sails tailored to suit everyone on board.

By choosing a Banda Sea crossing for your phinisi charter, you’ll take in a whole different spectrum of land and ocean life. These Spice Islands tell the story of nutmeg, clove and mace becoming a sought-after commodity in the 16th century. Now you can see reminders of this era through the colonial architecture of Banda Besar, before hiking up Mount Api, spotting dolphins and whales off Ambon harbour and relaxing on the white sand shores of Pulau Hatta.

Komodo is perhaps the most visited area in the phinisis’ itinerary though. This protected cluster of islands has long captured people’s imaginations with its pink beaches, lush mountains and infamous Komodo dragons, which some people say are worth the journey alone.

Here you can see the contrasting terrain of Komodo National Park, encounter the world’s largest lizards in their natural habitat and see thousands of fruit bats take flight at sunset.

In any of these remote regions, water sports become an intrinsic part of the experience. Diving and snorkelling are a daily draw and the most luxurious yachts come with an abundance of water toys. This is how many people choose to spend their time on board and everyone seems to leave spellbound by what they see.

Sailing On A Six Star Yacht To The Real North https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/sailing-on-a-six-star-yacht-to-the-real-north/ Thu, 19 Sep 2019 15:00:12 +0000 https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/?p=18076

Scenic Eclipse – one of the northernmost maritime indulgence ever navigated

It was what Titanic sought out to be: a luxury cruise for the elites, affording them the comfort of their own palatial homes into glorious decks and cabins. The merriment of fine feasting, the joy of good company, and all that, minus the fear of slamming into an iceberg. Sailors have learned their lesson now; and while there may be new Jacks and Roses sauntering down the halls in their own romantic notion, fear is not part of the experience. Only comfort. And yes, there are still icebergs along the coast.

Scenic Eclipse - Lumière

Scenic Eclipse – Lumière

The Scenic Eclipse launches from its port and sets its sail across the frosty Reykjavik, Iceland, to the spring-seasoned Quebec, Canada—a 13-day inaugural journey that would make a mark in one’s memory. People call it the “discovery yacht,” a luxury expedition ship that marries comfort and curiosity, admonition and adventure. Larger than a yacht, yet smaller than a ship, the Eclipse had itself fully decked with veranda suites, all catered to accommodate—and please—more than 200 guests at a time. A stay is like a holiday in a beach resort; there’s the sight of the blue sea from the sliding doors, one can freely open to inhale the fresh scent of the sea. The interiors are decadent; plush couches, marble tables, curtained post beds with ambient lighting, with some suites boasting of a jacuzzi in their private verandas. But perhaps the real extravagance are the penthouse suites, with staterooms spanning up to 2,650 sq. ft, readily indulging one with sublime comfort and privacy.

When there are swanky guests aboard, there are, of course, butlers. Every suite is armed with one, who also works as “discovery guides,” personal assistants who offer on-the-shore excursions, tours in the ship, and a response to everyone’s requests. While there are many water sport activities provided onboard, the ship has embellished itself with indoor amusements, including indoor pools, an expansive spa, a yoga studio and a lavish gym. One shouldn’t miss their workouts, even on voyage.

For the hungry, The Scenic Eclipse is not content to provide one or two options. There are nine restaurants onboard, each brimming with their own cultural delicacies, spanning over Asian fusion, the internationally beloved French fine dining, a chef’s private table, and for those who couldn’t be separated from the pool, a nearby buffet.

There is an obvious posh to its atmosphere, but the true luxury of the ship comes from its entire built–one created to ensure all the refined celebrities lodged inside are taken safely from one shore to another without breaking a sweat. Onboard its decks is a technological innovation armed with the latest maritime advancement: zero-speed stabilizer fins crafted 50% larger than standard. The ship is equipped with a GPS dynamic positioning system, especially on its stationary mode. Polar Class 6, the most superior ice class rating, has been awarded to the Scenic Eclipse, equipped with a full arsenal on safety systems, navigation, propulsion, and weather-adapting refrigeration. Thus, breaking the ice, one might literally say, is a breeze.

But the extraordinary extravagance is experienced somewhere else—up in the air, where the clouds push away to give one the most unobstructed sight of the polar caps, of the mountain vales, of the lush green rainforests. This is made possible by the two 6-seater H130 helicopters sitting prettily atop the ship’s hangar. Beholding the Earth from above is a privilege.

After a successful voyage into the icy waters of Reykjavik, the Scenic Eclipse has exclusive journeys through the sun-kissed seas of the Mediterranean, the mythical mountains of the Baltics, the spirited Caribbean, the frosty Arctic and the culturally rich backdrop of the Americas. www.scenic.com.au ◼

All Aboard Through France’s Pretty Waterways https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/all-aboard-through-frances-pretty-waterways/ Fri, 26 Jul 2019 00:16:02 +0000 https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/?p=17791

Take to the waterways for a family-friendly adventure with French flair.

With its mix of historic cities, glamorous boulevards, chic boutiques and endless culinary discoveries it’s not hard to understand why France is the world’s most popular tourist destination. But sometimes the crowds start to wear me down, and I long for a bit of unfiltered French countryside — a bit of space, where selfie-sticks are seldom seen and local markets trump international brands.

Which is how we – my wife and seven-year-old son in tow – found ourselves leaving Paris behind as our TGV train sped to the south-west. Our destination? The charming little town of Jarnac, where we’d stock up on supplies and step aboard for a week of barging on the Charente River.

Over the past decade barging holidays have become a hugely popular way to discover the French countryside, with self-drive boats allowing you to explore towns and villages off the tourist track. And it’s all done at a leisurely pace that allows you to relax and reconnect with family without rushing between those ‘must see’ sights. On the river, time slows down, and you’ll mark the days in market visits and your next leisurely meal, not your next Insta-story.

The cobbled streets of Cognac

The cobbled streets of Cognac

There are beautiful rivers to explore across France, but we had chosen the sinuous Charente River in central France. From its source at Chéronnac, the Charente flows for 380-kilometres through pastoral scenery of farmland, vineyards and scenic villages. With some of the cleanest water in France, it’s perfect for swimming too.

We’d hired a luxury barge from leading European operator Le Boat, and after a brief tutorial about piloting the boat, and life on board, we were ready to cast off. With a clear chart of the river in hand, and seven days stretching out ahead of us, we had one simple decision to make. We left it to my son: left or right on the map.

Grand châteaux line the river banks

Grand châteaux line the river banks

Heading upstream would take us towards the medieval hilltop town of Angoulême and through the quiet upper reaches of the Charente River, while downstream would head past grand chateaux and scenic vineyards. I won’t lie, I was happy he chose downstream -because the highlight of the Charente is undoubtedly the town of Cognac, synonymous around the world with the fiery French spirit that was born here.

The town is home to the world’s most respected cognac houses; the likes of Martell and Rémy Martin; and, best of all, our mooring at the town pier was just a few minutes’ walk from the cellar door. On a bright summer’s morning we wandered through Cognac’s cobbled lanes, stopping at the town’s tasting rooms to sip and sample this iconic French spirit.

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre in Saintes dates to the 12th-century

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre in Saintes dates to the 12th-century

Though less famous than the town’s other marques, the most charming experience is to be found at the 10th-century Château de Cognac, where we toured the atmospheric barrel cellars and sipped on aged Baron Otard cognac.

By the afternoon, our shopping basket filled with local bread and charcuterie, we cast off and motored downstream. One of the real joys of a boating holiday is the simple freedom to stop wherever you choose. On hot afternoons we’d tie up to a secluded mooring for a swim in the clean waters of the Charente.

Local seafood from the nearby Atlantic ports

Local seafood from the nearby Atlantic ports

If we wanted peace and quiet, and a family dinner enjoyed on the open-air top deck of our boat, we’d select a country mooring and soak up the sunset without another soul in sight. Or, if we preferred a meal in a local bistro we’d plan to moor for the night in one of the towns that sprout along the riverbank.

Fresh peaches and summer’s bounty in local markets

Fresh peaches and summer’s bounty in local markets

These rivers were once the arteries of France, carrying trade between the ocean and the hinterland. For centuries trading ships have plied the waters of the Charente, carrying fresh produce and aged cognac to the Atlantic port at Rochefort, returning with salt from the coast.

Floral wanders in local villages

Floral wanders in local villages

To smooth their passage the Charente – like many major rivers in France – was levelled out with locks, their large wooden gates raising and lowering the river for boats to pass through stone corridors. On the Charente most locks are manual, requiring an energetic 30 minutes of turning wheels and throwing ropes to navigate safely through. It’s hard work in the heat, but great fun for families.

Market fare will fill your boat’s galley

Market fare will fill your boat’s galley

But that’s about the hardest you’ll have to work on a barging holiday. The new generation of riverboats come with all the mod-cons, from spacious sun-decks and outdoor barbecues to indoor air-con and integrated USB ports. And steering the boats is easier than driving a car, with simple controls and bow/stern thrusters to make mooring a breeze.

The village of Saint-Savinien is famous for its stone, and its church

The village of Saint-Savinien is famous for its stone, and its church

This left us with plenty of time to plot our course for the week. Near the village of Chaniers – don’t miss the Sunday morning oyster market – we admired the seven arches of the 17th-century mill house. Today, completely restored, Le Moulin is home to an acclaimed restaurant popular with day-trippers.

At the hamlet of Dompierre sur Charente we sat in reverie in the 11th-century chapel, and amused the locals with our poor French while buying pain au chocolat at the village boulangerie.

The Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes dates back nearly 1000 years

The Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes dates back nearly 1000 years

One of the standouts of the Charente is the town of Saintes, which dates back two thousand years to Roman times. Back then, it was known as Mediolanum Santonum, and today still the towering stone arch of Arc de Germanicus dominates the riverbank. Just a short walk from our overnight mooring – free of charge, with power and water to plug into – we gazed up at the Gothic architecture of the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, and tackled the steep hills to the Roman amphitheatre.

Country moorings offer plenty of downtime

The next morning we jostled with the locals at the Marche St. Pierre, stocking up on seasonal fruit, ripe local cheese and wonderful regional seafood for dinner. Later we’d while away the afternoon in Saint-Savinien, a charming village of quiet squares and family-friendly attractions, before a last evening moored in the quiet countryside, sipping local wines as the sun slipped beneath the river. A memorable end to what was our first holiday on the waters of France, but certainly not the last. Book via leboat.com ◼

Sail the sea in ‘Grand Journeys’ https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/sail-the-sea-in-grand-journeys/ Thu, 11 Jul 2019 14:00:43 +0000 https://www.wtravelmagazine.com/?p=17607

The men of the old navigated the globe by way of the sea, unravelling new cultures and continents in year-long voyages and often, dangerous trips. But the present-day luxury travellers have no time for an extended voyage; thus, Crystal Cruises launched the Crystal Grand Journey – a glorious exploration of the world’s best itineraries, treating its crowd with diverse landscapes, breath-taking stops and magnificent adventures only ocean navigation can provide.

Each journey ranges from 14 to 27 days, passing through the sun-kissed regions of Mediterranean, Caribbean, Central America, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific with nearly no repeating ports. The short span of time affords travellers to soak into the splendour of each region, over the course of one satisfying holiday.

Delight in short stops over the mythical Greek Isles. Explore the jungles of Costa Rica. Dance in the tune of the Orleans and see the dazzling beaches in Asia. One, however, has the option to immerse themselves with different cultures, spending more time with the people rather than sightseeing.

For the travellers with less time in their hands, there’s Crystal Getaways, a meaningful cruise that lasts from 7 to 14 days. Packed with diverse adventures and luxurious experiences, this shorter jaunt promises a one- of-a-kind escapade. crystalcruises.com ◼

This one’s for the boating aficionados: Samujana Koh Samui has a wide selection of boats for charter during your stay through tried and tested vendors. There are six unique boats for you to take out for a spin, ranging from a sprawling catamaran with three luxurious staterooms to a traditional sailing junk yacht that’s the biggest around Samui and the gulf.

If you want to head out on a private snorkelling expedition of your own, do so in style on the Kindred Spirit. Its perfect for larger groups, and its three luxurious staterooms and experienced crew are all well-equipped to provide you with a great trip to discover the neighbouring islands.

Alternatively, head out for a romantic sunset sail on the Baidee, an intimate speedboat that will take you on a cruise of the most remote southern islands. Delicious food will also be served onboard, including breakfast, a hearty lunch, and snacks whenever you desire.

The Red Baron is the most distinctive of the lot, what with its striking red sails and traditional junk-style exterior. But don’t let it’s rustic look fool you: its built of only the sturdiest woods and is held to the strictest international safety standards. ◼
