Japanese winters embody a breathtaking paradox. This country of ancient temples and neon cities transforms into a dreamscape of snowy tranquillity, proving that Japan’s magic lies in its ability to surprise and mesmerize. Beyond the bustling cities and deep-rooted traditions, it morphs into a captivating winter wonderland, offering a blend of scenic rail journeys, world-class ski slopes, and invigorating onsens (hot springs).

Your journey commences in Tokyo, the pulsating heart of Japan, and unfolds aboard one of the many legendary Shinkansen high-speed bullet train lines, synonymous with precision, speed, and comfort. As the train slips away from the city’s skyline and into the heart of the majestic Japanese Alps, you’ll find yourself swept into the embrace of Nagano and Hakuba Valley.

Embracing the snow at Nagano

Nestled within this breathtaking alpine panorama are ten interconnected ski resorts, including Happo-One, the region’s crown jewel. With an impressive annual snowfall of over 11 meters, it presents an exhilarating experience for all winter sports enthusiasts. The snowy slopes under a cerulean sky offer an exceptional skiing adventure that will enthral the novice and the expert alike.

The journey then carries you further into the winter reverie to Shiga Kogen. Another scenic two-hour rail journey from Hakuba, and you’re greeted by an expanse of meticulously groomed ski runs and thrilling moguls. Home to numerous interconnected resorts, Shiga Kogen is a paradise for winter sports lovers. Enhancing the charm of this winter haven is the annual March craft beer festival – an ambience-laden event featuring live music, cascading fireworks, and a sense of collective merriment.

Slowing the pace down at Yamanouchi

Transitioning from the adrenaline-fueled ski slopes of Shiga Kogen, your journey ebbs into the calmness of Yamanouchi. Here, amidst an oasis of meticulously landscaped Japanese gardens, sits the Senjukaku ryokan, a sanctuary of tranquillity. With its soul-soothing open-air hot springs, Senjukaku offers an immersion into a timeless Japanese tradition. The rooms, adorned with traditional tatami flooring and offering breathtaking views of snow-laden mountains, encapsulate the quintessential Japanese living experience. Further enhancing the appeal, the ryokan’s lobby transforms into an art gallery gracefully adorned with intricate Japanese drawings, adding a stroke of artistic elegance to your journey.

Travelling through Japan during winter offers a journey that transcends the ordinary. It’s a multifaceted experience that invites you to explore landscapes adorned with winter’s graceful touch, exhilarating ski resorts boasting world-class facilities, and the serenity of traditional hot springs. As the snowflakes dance in the cold air and the warmth of an onsen wraps around you, the allure of Japan’s winter wonderland is undeniable.

So, pack your ski gear, embrace the chill, and let Japan’s winter landscapes captivate your wanderlust. Be it the breathtaking train journeys, the adrenaline rush of the ski slopes, or the soothing calm of an onsen, every aspect of your journey will inspire and create memories that will last a lifetime. Japan’s snowy splendour awaits, ready to charm travellers from every corner of the globe. ◼

There’s nothing quite like sailing along the coast of Portugal during the summer. Gliding through the crystal-clear waters, you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking coastline views and the open sea. The salty sea breeze will whip through your hair, and the warm sun will kiss your skin, creating an unforgettable experience you’ll cherish forever. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a beginner, there’s no better way to explore the beauty of Portugal than by sailing.

One of the best things about sailing in Portugal is the opportunity to explore some of the country’s most exclusive and unspoiled locations. From secluded coves to pristine beaches, the Portuguese coast is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. And with a skipper included, you won’t have to worry about navigating unfamiliar waters. Instead, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride as you’re taken to some of the most breathtaking destinations in Portugal.

In addition to the stunning scenery, sailing in Portugal offers a chance to indulge in the country’s delicious gastronomy. From freshly caught seafood to locally sourced produce, Portugal is a food lover’s paradise. And with so many charming seaside towns and fishing villages dotted along the coast, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample the local cuisine. So whether you’re dining on board your yacht or exploring a quaint seaside restaurant, the food in Portugal is sure to tantalize your taste buds.

But the most rewarding part of sailing in Portugal is the chance to disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. As you sail along the coast, you’ll leave behind the hustle and bustle of daily life and enter a world of tranquillity and serenity. The only sounds you’ll hear are the gentle lapping of the waves and the creaking of the boat’s rigging, creating a peaceful, calming atmosphere that will rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul.

Experience India uniquely and luxuriously – embark on a premium Ganges River Cruise. This grand voyage takes you through India’s heartland over the course of 51 days in unparalleled comfort.

The cruise on MV Ganga Vilas by Antara Cruises is unlike anything else – it is India’s first full-fledged luxury river experience, with all the amenities of an exquisite luxury resort. With India’s rich and diverse landscape as your backdrop, explore India in a way only this river can offer. From India’s bustling cities to its remote villages and exotic wildlife, this cruise ensures you don’t miss a thing.

It will be quite an experience to cruise along the Ganges River, a waterway used for navigation and transportation for thousands of years. India’s river cruise offers a unique journey you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Enjoy freshly prepared meals, luxurious cabins and unparalleled service from the India-trained crew onboard MV Ganga Vilas, already sold out until March 2024.

The journey along the River Ganges onboard MV Ganga Vilas

The river sailing on MV Ganga Vilas begins in Varanasi, India’s spiritual capital, and continues eastwards for Dibrugarh in Assam via Bangladesh. Over the course of 3200 km and 51 days, explore 27 river systems through five states in eastern India. Discover unique wildlife, vibrant cities and ancient monuments along the way. From World Heritage Sites to river ghats and national parks, this is a journey of a lifetime.

Antara Cruises also offers 3- to 8-day journeys, allowing you to tailor your trip based on the time you have. So regardless of the duration of your cruise, you can expect to be entertained and pampered with carefully curated onboard experiences.

Sights along the river system include Kashi, Bodh Gaya, Vikramshila, Patna and Majuli. You will also have the opportunity to cruise through Dhaka in Bangladesh for a unique multinational experience. Marvel at India’s natural diversity as you pass through the Sundarbans and forests of Assam.

What’s onboard MV Ganga Vilas

MV Ganga Vilas is a 62-metre long, 12-metre wide river cruise carrying 36 passengers in 18 luxe suites. It features three decks, butler service, inspired cuisine, wifi, all-inclusive shore excursions, and signature events. With a draft requirement of only 1.4m MV Ganga Vilas can traverse shallow waters, allowing travellers to explore almost all parts of the river. In addition, a high crew-to-guest ratio ensures personalized services, allowing guests to make the most of their luxury river cruise.

The rise of river cruising in India

India’s river cruise industry is beginning to rise, with offerings similar to river cruises found on the Danube, Rhine and Seine. Now travellers can experience a luxurious river cruise on India’s waterways, complete with all the amenities associated with traditional river cruising. At the same time, ten new passenger ship terminals along National Waterway-2 (an 891-kilometre section of the Brahmaputra River) will allow travellers from all around the world to explore and experience the river’s diverse culture.

River tourism offers a sensible way to bring focus and attention to river cleanliness, river safety and river beautification. Moreover, as river tourism grows, it can provide a source of income for local communities living along the riverbanks and will indeed become one of India’s many sought-after experiences in no time.

During a speech in December, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “This will be an unprecedented cruise of its kind in the whole world. It will also be a reflection of the growing cruise tourism (industry) in India.”

India’s Union Port, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal added, “Our rich heritage will get further transcended in the global stage as tourists will be able to experience the spiritual, educational…cultural as well as the richness of the biodiversity of India.”

Kashif Siddiqui, Antara’s director of sales and marketing, told CNN in an interview that the plan is to run the 3,200-km cruise on the Ganges twice a year between October and March when the weather is nice, and the river water is high. Tickets to board the MV Ganga Vilas costs between 4.2 million to 4.5 million rupees or $51,000 to $54,800 per guest.

Antara Cruise’s MV Ganga Vilas is a magnificent river-travel experience that will take you through India in time and style, making it a journey to remember forever. ◼
